Live TV load speed - Shield TV vs iOS

Recommended Posts

I've been testing my HDHomerun for OTA and I've noticed that the speed to click "play / Tune to Channel" on a channel and the time in which it starts is vastly different between a wireless iPad 2018 and a wired nVidia Shield TV.  I was expecting the wired Shield TV to be light years ahead of the iPad, but it's the complete opposite.

iPad 2018 start: 2-3 seconds

nVidia Shield TV: 10-13 seconds

Emby Premiere Server 3.5.3.0

Is this expected behavior?

Hi.  We'd have to look at specifics but, one possibility is that the first attempt to play is failing and we are having to fall back to error correction.

How to Report a Problem

Do you have the "Expose Closed Captions in live and recorded TV" option enabled?

Options, App Settings, Live TV.

This is only in the beta and is completely irrelevant to tuning speed.

Thanks.

Annecdotal evidence says otherwise, but once it's fully in the wild, more people will have access to it.

I'm sorry, but no it doesn't.  No one has produced any evidence of that and I cannot see how this feature could be related to start speed since it isn't even interrogated until after the stream starts playing.

I have always had excruciatingly slow channel load times on ShieldTV served via ethernet from my i5 4690k.

Slow on web client or ET on the same machine too.

This is one of my biggest "just accept it" items but hopefully it can be improved!

Problem being, it's not universal.  My load times are like under 3 seconds.  That's the issue.

It was on. I flipped off and it's the same speed. No difference.

I'll work on getting a bug report submitted.

What is your setup?

Server? Tuner? Client?

I'm using HDHOMERUN Quatro, Windows Server 2016, 32gb of ram and local storage for recordings.

Makes me wonder if it's OTA vs cable card?

Well no right? It's got to be software client since it's loading up just fine in IOS. I'll check my hardwired Apple TV client next.

Pretty close in specs. I even have 12gb Ram and gigabyte ethernet. Could it be that you're using Linux and I'm using Windows 7?

I do boot off of SSD, have my Emby data on a separate SSD and record to yet a third SSD.

As a quick follow-up, Apple TV 4K performed as slowly as Shield version.

Playback via Shield stats for nerds:

Player: ExoPlayer

Play Method: Remix

Stream Type: HLS

Video Codec: MPEG2VIDEO (direct)

Transcode Reason: Unsupported Container

No clue why it's saying it's transcoding, but I'd guess that's why it's slow?

We have an update in beta for Apple TV that will bring it on par with iOS.
