Server doesn't recognize some subtitles

Hello,

this is a follow up from this topic:

http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/5901-fr-server-filter-episodes-without-subtitles/

The server shows some episodes as being without subtitles, while subtitles are actually available and working. I found that the issue can be divided in two categories:

  • A small percentage of TV recording (.wtv files) with embedded closed captions (maybe 30 episodes out of more than 1000)
  • All of the videos that have external .sub/.idx subtitles.

Are these known issues?

Thanks!

I really don't think the server recognizes external subs.

srt subtitles are recognized without issues, in my experience.

Correct the server doesn't look for external subs/idx at all. Same with embedded closed captions.

We may bring support in at a latter time but for now in the case of external sub file you will have to embed it into an mkv or convert it to either an .ass or .srt file (with some ocr subtitle software).

Yes you are right. It was MBT that didn't see external subs. I just tried it and it worked but I am sure it has to be in the same folder as the movie.

I saw that embedded closed captions cannot be played in the server, but for most of the episodes at least, if I click on "media info" it tells me that closed captions are avaliable (I then use MBC to play the video). But for some episodes the media info is wrong and it doesn't indicates that the closed captions are there. I'm interested in this feature not to play wtv files through the server, but to use the report sections to quickly see which episodes are missing subtitles. Right now I have a lot of "false positives" in the sense that the reports sections says that closed captions are missing, but they are actually there.

we get the data from ffmpeg. perhaps it doesn't understand wtv closed captions all that well.

That's probably it. This is an example of an episode correctly recognized:

and this is an example of the issue:

Same series, recorded on the same channel, both wtv files with closed captions.

Not a huge issue, in the end.
