Emby wrong Subtitles

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I'm running emby server 3.6.0.71 beta. Certain episodes of my show play the wrong subtitles. I have play only perfect subtitles unchecked for my TV library. I have also manually checked the srt file asociated with the TV show and it's the right subtitle. However, emby seems to play the first subtitle found when I go to edit subtitle and search. This happens regardless of if I download the second subtitle in that list which is the actual one. I've had this happen on 2 different episodes (they were different seasons). Anything I can do to fix it?

Edit: I also have this issue where after a while the notification bar disappears from my phone and I have to open up the app to control media. And sometimes after playing something for a while, it won't go to the next episode, just a black screen.

Hi, why do you feel the subtitles are wrong? Remember - these are your subtitle files.

I have play only perfect subtitles unchecked for my TV library.

We do not have a setting to play only perfect subtitles. We DO have a setting to only download subtitles that are a perfect match, and that is enabled by default. But once the subtitles are downloaded, there is no way to know if they are perfect or not. If you manually added any subtitles, they may or may not be perfect and there is no way for Emby to know that.

Does this answer your question?

So it downloaded a "perfect match" but the subtitle was S02E01 when I'm watching S02E09. I'm not sure why it's a perfect match. So I delete the subtitle file and download the correct one, then rescan my TV shows for new files. I confirm this by opening the .srt file in a text editor. However, emby still plays the S02E01 file. I tried stopping the show, turning off emby, and restarting the server. I'm not sure why it's still playing the wrong subtitle.

Can you please restart the server, then reproduce the problem again, and then attach the emby server log? thanks !

I restarted my entire server this time and played the show again. Here's the attached log file.

Is there any cache of what subtitle it should be playing or something that I can clear?

Edit: It's definitely something being saved on the server because if I play the media that I'm having issues with on VLC media player locally on my computer, it will load the proper subtitles. However, Emby will have the old wrong subtitles playing for some reason. There are no embedded subtitles in the mkv file either.

I even tried removing my TV shows library and re-scanning it in. Considering it saves watched history as well, that means it's saving the incorrect subtitle it's pointing to. How do u clear that so it can sync with the proper subtitle?

Try deleting this folder, and then try again.

/var/lib/emby/data/subtitles

Thanks.

Yes that fixed it. What is the point of that folder?

Also any idea on these issues?

- I cast to chromecast from my phone and a lot of times the notification bar wont persist and I will have to open up the app to control media.

- Sometimes after playing something for a while, it won't go to the next episode, I hear my HDD spin as if it's loading media, but the screen will just go black.

When we convert subtitles, the output of the conversion is saved in this folder so that we don't have to do it again. If you change the subtitle files then we need to reset the saved copies, so we'll look at this . Thanks.

Can we go over an example? Thanks.

Why do subtitles need to be converted if they're already in srt format? Also I'm not sure if it's intentional but if you go to the TV show's info page and select subtitles from there, it will not turn on subtitles if the movie is already playing. You would have to remote control emby, select the cc icon, and select captions from there. But these options are independent of each other, selecting subtitles on one does not reflect in the other and vice versa.

An example would be if I finish an episode, normally it will show the cover art and a spinning circle to play the next episode. However, I noticed that sometimes the screen will just go black instead and not load the next episode. When it goes black, I hear my HDD spinning up as if it was waking from idle. So I guess emby isn't waiting long enough for the server to wake the disk to load the next media.

Web browsers and Chromecast don't support .srt. They support .vtt so we have to convert the subtitles. It's an easy conversion though because the formats are similar.

Right, these are pre-playback controls.

You mentioned me but I no longer seem to have this issue anymore.
