erikastevens30 2 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Good Day to all... I have a few questions regarding Emby and its associated apps. My LAN is based on Windows Server 2016 and its sole purpose is to handle my home network traffic requests. I also installed Emby server yesterday to handle my video library. The videos will be played in various locations throughout my house using hardwired computers and/or laptops (no WiFi used). All the devices are Windows based and are up to date with their respective updates, etc. The setup went easy with no pronounced issues atm. The use of Emby is restricted to LAN only use as i will not be streaming a video from my LAN to any outside location (at least for now). My confusion comes in the form of the apps used to connect to Emby. I understand there is an Emby app, that came with the installation of the server but there is also a way to access my Emby server by going to the Emby website and signing in. Is this method of signing in different than using the "app"? Lastly, I can also use a web browser and connect using the LAN IP of the Emby server and watch my videos. So, my question is this, which way is the method so that I am only using a local environment? Thanks in advance.
Luke 42083 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Hi, the web app is just another option at your disposal. It may not have the same feature set as an installed app from a store, but it's great if you just want to click and play. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !
ebr 16187 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Hi. If you are on your own network, all forms of access will be local. You will connect directly to your server.
legallink 187 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Not to override Luke or ebr, but I think there is some confusion possibly in terminology. All things can be considered apps, although I think most people differentiate between a web app and a native app. When the server is installed, it also provides a web app that is accessible. If you restrict access to your local network, then the server web app would access locally (obviously). What that would also do, and this is where I think I am correct, but could be wrong (correct me if wrong @@ebr and @luke), is that any access through "Emby Connect" would no longer work. Aka, going to app.emby.media or tv.emby.media wouldn't work...and I believe that is the web app you are referring to? However, if you used, say the iOS app or the Android app, or the FireTV app, etc., those would all work provided that you accessed them from within your local network (or through a VPN if you had a more elaborate setup). Or if you typed in the IP address of the server with the correct port number, that would also work.
erikastevens30 2 Posted November 26, 2018 Author Posted November 26, 2018 Good day...Thanks to all for clearing this up for me. I did notice that just using a browser with the correct IPA and/or using "localhost" would get me to my local server which is just fine. My concern came into effect when I went online using app.emby.media and signed in. The result was that it connected to my home server which blew me away as it should not have access to it at all. I will need to check the LAN securities to make sure i didn't overlook something. On the upside, all works fine and now i just need to fine tune the setup. Cheers!
ebr 16187 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Hi. Even using the online web app, if there is a local route to your server, that's what it will use.
erikastevens30 2 Posted November 27, 2018 Author Posted November 27, 2018 As I am adding folders to my library, I came across this issue. I have a folder named Movies with various movies in their own folders within it. I also have a folder named John Wayne with various movies within it. I was expecting to see in the home screen a poster of Movies and a poster of john Wayne. Only the poster "Movies" shows up however, drilling down to see the library of movies I see that Emby has extracted those john Wayne movies and listed them with the movies category. I then moved out the JW folder to the root outside of the Movies folder and you guessed it, I now have a poster of Movies and a poster of John Wayne on the home screen. Drilling down on each of these gives me the correct library of movies and in fact the JW folder which was moved out of the movies folder no longer indicates the JW movies within "movies" but they are now within the JW poster. Although I do like seeing the 2 posters segregated from each other, I was just curious as to why the JW folder would not show up within the Movies section. Other than this, it is going well.
legallink 187 Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 The way the library setup works, each movie should be in its own folder. A JW folder isn’t necessary. If you want to group all JW movies, you would create a “collection” and add al, JW movies there.
Happy2Play 9783 Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Emby displays Movies in a flat layout not matter how nested they are. Folder view is improve in the next release when you select folders view. With your situation with JW folder collection you would have to manually create a JW collection via the UI by selection all the JW movies and add to collection. Then ensure you have "Group items into collections" enabled via Dashboard-Library-Display on current stable release. This is move to a per library option in next release (3.6).
erikastevens30 2 Posted November 27, 2018 Author Posted November 27, 2018 Nice, thank you much for this information. I will try out the "collection" model to see how it works. This may be the ticket so that I can nest in other folders
Luke 42083 Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Yea the Folders tab in the next release will be exactly what you're looking for, if that's what you want.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but one option would be this: 1.Set up two different folders, "Movies" and "John Wayne". 2. Create 2 different libraries, again "Movies" and "John Wayne"., And point then to their respective folders. If you want, Movies could point to BOTH folders, so all your movies would be in the movies library (where you can use collections to group all John Wayne movies under 1 item) but you'd also see them in a seperate library from the home screen.
