Remote Client Direct Playing

No matter what I do on the server end, two of my remote users/clients are trying to direct play remotely (out of network... Way out of network in fact).

The two clients are Emby via MrMC and some sort of Samsung TV.

I've set global streaming bitrate to 3.25mbps. It works for all other clients. As an experiment I tried setting the two users via their profile both on the server and in their web browser profile to 3.25mbps. No luck!

One user was able to navigate to Samsung Embu gui and change to 3.25mbps. Still wants to direct play. The MrMC client cannot figure out how to set it to limit bandwidth.

That all shouldn't matter though. Each of these users are out of network and the server should recognize that. Instead the server sees the user and/or device as a localhost and is not transcoding.

On another frustrating Emby Server note (this deserves another thread)... I added these two users (for the first time in a very long time) and noticed Emby Server automatically checks the boxes "allow user to delete media" and "allow user to convert media"... For real? These users could cause alot of damage if they weren't careful! All of these boxes should be unchecked by default. Just sayin...

Hi, this setting requires support from the app developers. Has MrMC implemented this?

Also what app is being used on the Samsung TV?

Luke, I understand all that; however, it shouldn't matter because I've limited the bandwidth allowance on the server side. Unless of course you're suggesting there is a loophole on the client end? Or there is a known limitation?

In my opinion, if the server says that 3.25mbps is the max allowed for out of network clients then that should be the end all regardless of what the client is asking for.

Right but they are deciding client side to direct play. The server can't lower the bitrate when direct playing. The only thing we could do is throw an error saying playback not allowed but I've chosen not to do that.

Try using the emby app. It will support this feature.

That doesn't seem logical to me. If I'm limiting the bandwidth on the server side it seems to me that there should never be a situation where the client can exceed the bandwidth limitation. The client can hog all the upload bandwidth by doing so. If I were the developer I would cause the "error saying playback not allowed" as you pointed out.

I haven't played around with Emby for a few months. I have it on cruise control and it has worked for the most part requiring no maintenance on my end until now. I added a few clients yesterday and I'm frustrated at a few things. I mentioned in my first post that Emby Server automatically checks the boxes "allow user to delete media" and "allow user to convert media". I think these should be off by default. Make the administrator check these boxes if needed. On another note, those two users are trying to download some movies via the Emby mobile app. I have downloads set to convert and sync every 30 minutes. The movies are just sitting there waiting to be downloaded. That's not quite as intuitive as Netflix. What is the hold up here? We've tried everything - including makings sure the app is not set to "only download via WiFi".

If I were the developer I would cause the "error saying playback not allowed" as you pointed out.

I'll probably look at doing that after the upcoming release. Nonetheless, the direct play and transcoding api's are two different api's.  The app has to incorporate the server setting into it's decision of which one to use, therefore some participation will be required on the part of the mrmc developers.

Regarding the mobile app, what devices is this happening on?

Regarding the direct play vs. transcoding. Those two client apps were MrMC mobile version (Fire Tablet due to fact Fire Tablet isn't allowing users to natively download Emby app). The other client app is Samsungs 2014 (or so) built in OS. I installed that for the client, set bitrate to 3mbps and it still direct plays.

For the client app that isn't transferring the converted media. That client is using ios Emby (via iPhone)... Still shows 0% downloaded on server end. Only one has 100% status. There are four waiting to download. It's been hung up like that all day. I even restarted the server remotely to see if that triggered it.

Can you please attach the emby server log? thanks.

Ok I will... the most recent one? I'd either prefer emailing it or having you look at the server yourself.

Ideally from the time you attempted a download from iOS. What version of iOS?
