* Increase the alphabet picker to the resolution of your screen and keep it fixed placement

Those header tabs are relevant to library content type.  So if you don't want them you can use "Mixed Content" type libraries instead of Movie.

* Free members don't have access to Trailers

* Favourites could be placed next to Select View | Sort | Filter | Favourites (like shown; image below):

Sure, but it's nice to see the genres in a list, rather than via filters.

My bad No movie suggestions are currently available. Start watching and rating your movies, and then come back to view your recommendations.

 

Why not have suggestions be an option to appear on the front page instead

I guess you could, but what if you have two different movie libraries and you don't want to mix suggestions between the two?

This could be applied to all libraries, let the user decide what they what shown on their front page!

Give the user the option; allow them to pick what libraries they want in their suggestions
