Subtitles and transcoding

I currently use 1:1 blu ray mkv rips, the subtitles are all pgs format, i am just wondering if a device like my samsung tv which supports the codec MKV H.264, and the audio, but i need subtitles which are not supported by the tv (Pgs) will the server automatically transcode since my samsung does not support pgs subtitles and burn them in? Currently it seems if it can play the audio and video without transcoding...then it wont transcode.

Im unsure how this works and cant test it because currently you cant pick subtitles during remote play.

I notice plex requires alot of manual intervention per client (you have to specify in the individual client you are using you want to transcode if you need pgs subtitles for instance otherwise they are grayed out and unselectable until you select transcode) but with no ability to remotely select subtitles right now I am unsure how this works for mb3.

From what I understand, using external subtitle files will almost always trigger transcoding.

Interesting, mine are internal, will that trigger transcoding as well?

I guess this should maybe be in the dlna forum, for instance if i play to my tv and decide to select a subtitle (pgs internal) would that trigger transcoding?

Unfortunately at the moment i have no idea how i can play to a device and select a subtitle stream myself, i dont think its implemented yet.

Most subs will trigger a transcode as we currently burn them in.

Pgs subs will always trigger transcode (and it is unlikely to change as the pgs are graphics based subs and have to be treated as a video stream and overlayed on the top of the main video. Not many devices will be able to render pgs subs natively.

Ok thats good to know :)  As that was my concern, nothing in my house besides mbt can play pgs subtitles.
