I did not find a list indicating supported external player ?

I have used many players. MX player with the codec pack was best for me. As long as it's seen as a player by the device it can be used.

If there is an issue with using the internal player (Exoplayer) please do bring it to the attention of @EBR 

 

The last few updates to the beta app have solved many/most issues we used to get when trying to use Exoplayer - just FYI
