Photo Sorting

My photos have titles / captions added which display fine in Emby. The underlying files are named with an event and sequential number which indicates the order i want them showing in.

 

From what i can work out the option to sort by name sorts by the title / caption and the option to sort by folder sorts by the underlying file name. all ok so far (apart from sort by folder is not really intuitive to get sort by filename but i guess these are the same throughout emby)

 

my issue seems to be that if i have added a caption / title, with either of the two options i highlighted, the photos are ALWAYS listed by the caption / title.

 

Examples. this set, where i think i have applied the caption to the wrong field (so no title) are sorted correctly

 

this set, which have titles are listed by the title, even though i'm asking it to sort by the file name.

The sort by folders option probably needs a better label, but it is actually sort by: is folder, then by sort title. I suppose it could be changed to where the latter portion is by filename.

that would seem more logical as there is already an option to sort by name. plus i remember specifically discussing with ebr or maybe you when photos were brought in that, sort by filename had to be an option because if people take the time to create albums then 99% of the time this is the way they set up the order that they want the photos to be displayed. and it was for a good while, but at some point has been changed.

 

you need a sort by filename option somehow and yes i would say its far more sensible for sort by folders to be folder, then by sort filename than folder then title

Whilst on the topic of photos and seeing those screenshots above, I'm reminded of something that slightly affects day-to-day usability, especially with new users and when watched on a high res small screen, or just a TV from a distance. Some users are having a bit of a time understanding whether they were clicking on a video or photo, also taking time to find the folders...

Folders, photos, videos, look all the same except that pretty but small icon in the top left corner.

 

Some suggestions:

• If the folders thumbnails were instead several pictures in one that would make the folders more obvious, or a folder overlay with an embedded smaller picture?
• If video always displayed a play symbol that would make them stand out from photos
• If the icons had different colors, i.e. yellow folder, green photo, blue video or similar that would help. Only a tiny area of color could help. But would probably look worse and complicate themes.
• In the Settings screen behind the three dots, a switch next to the "Show titles" with "Show file extension"

 

And possibly a bigger but useful feature, let the videos/photos merge in to the same playlist, i.e. so that photos and videos can be interwoven and displayed in the same order as they are displayed in the library. Maybe a thing for this huge settings panel with just one setting, waiting to be populated with great features

no, it was more that the previously mentioned option “sort by folders” used to do this and stopped.
