AVTechMan 8 Posted November 1, 2018 Posted November 1, 2018 This is in reference to the cartoon TV Series Yu-Gi-Oh! I have both the uncut Japanese version and the edited English version. I like both versions for different reasons but the way I have it set up in the file structure: Animation\ Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters\ Season 1 (English) Season 1 (Japanese) The result is both the English and Japanese appear next to each other in the episode listing under Season 1 with English on top, Japanese on the bottom. I have to do a lot of manual editing for the titles of the Japanese eps so as to distinguish them from the English eps. Would it make sense to do it like this under one YGO folder or would it be better to create a separate YGO folder for just the Japanese episodes and the English eps their own folder? If I wanted to watch them back to back in my current configuration then it would play the English ep first, then the same Japanese ep next, then the next English ep, etc. I maybe could put the YGO series in as a collection but that's just for movies I believe.
Luke 42085 Posted November 1, 2018 Posted November 1, 2018 Hi, so they're both under the same series folder?
AVTechMan 8 Posted November 1, 2018 Author Posted November 1, 2018 Hi Luke, yes they are currently. Im building up my media collection on my unRAID server so I can move things around. It would be cool as like with movie collections when you select a TV series one could pick whether to pick the English version or the Japanese version with each with their own seasons under the Animation library.
Luke 42085 Posted November 3, 2018 Posted November 3, 2018 Ok, since the next release (3.6) of emby server is very close, let's go over the best options for that. There's three things I can think of, each with different trade-offs: Continue with merging into single series. Episodes will be merged together, and the multi-version selection feature can be used to select the one to play. Separate into different series per language, all in the same emby library, and disable the emby library setting to merge same series together Or use different top level libraries per language 1

The first option sounds very ideal, with the version selection feature I can select which version of the series to play without going back and forth between the English and Japanese version under the current method (which can make the viewing flow disjointing). Option 2 could work also as long as the correct metadata can be found though would have to be (in this case) with AniDB or MAL, and as long as the folder is named correctly in the file structure. Option 3 would be good if one had alot of separate libraries, but in my case I am trying to keep it more simple and concise as possible without too much confusion with extra libraries. In my setup the Animation library covers everything that's animated. I look forward to checking out the next release once its ready.
AVTechMan 8 Posted November 19, 2018 Author Posted November 19, 2018 Hi Luke, Okay I downloaded the Beta version of the server on a different machine to test as to not disturb my current one in production. I set up the same folder structure as before, with the YGO Series and both Season folders for the two versions under the same series. When selecting the Series name and when I click the 'Next Up', I then see where it says 'Version' and I can select which one i want to see. However, when I click on the season folder the option isn't there. I am thinking that perhaps when one clicks a season that option should be available like it was under the 'Next Up' heading. Like if a person clicks 'Play All' or 'Shuffle' that option to select which version should be available. I will try the second method and see how that works out but, I like the first option as it can be selected in either the web browser or the ET client.
Luke 42085 Posted November 19, 2018 Posted November 19, 2018 It's not a per season thing, it is per episode, so that is why you only see it on episode screens.

Makes sense when watching one episode at a time, or picking one at a time. Hopefully something like that could be implemented when watching several episodes in a row without having to manually select the episode each time.

Separate into different series per language, all in the same emby library, and disable the emby library setting to merge same series together Or use different top level libraries per language Doh, I just found this after posting a feature suggestion about merged series, so figured I'd throw in my thoughts based on my setup. Merging single series would be my ideal pick of the above. Emby would extract from the filename (- {type here}, .eng, .de, .jp, etc.) or use the audio-track specified language to be able to determine which 'version' of the episode the file is for. You then get a similar feature to picking a movie version to change between versions (could default to the language you selected in your profile). This would support things like foreign shows or anime, where there are multiple videos per language, but would also allow for episode variations (720p, 1080p, extended cut, etc.)
Luke 42085 Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 If you have two series folders of the same series and they are each configured to download metadata in a different language, then they will not be merged. This is to address complaints from users who wanted to be able to see the metadata in two different languages.
blizzrizz 1 Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 That's handy to know! For me, it's less about the metadata and more that there are two versions to pick from. with Anime, for example, I wouldn't want my metadata to be in Japanese, but I would want to be able to pick between watching between the Japanese subbed, and the English dubbed (could be different files, rather than just different audio-tracks, depending on the source). Same for TV Shows that may have multiple language versions.
