So I got sick of Plex and installed Emby...

I created my TV Shows folder. All the files are stored in one TV folder and each show is it's own folder in a structure like this

\TV\Show.Name.S01E01.1080\Show.Name.S01E01.1080.mkv

\TV\Show.Name.S01E02.1080\Show.Name.S01E02.1080.mkv

etc.

Emby is not picking up the metadata and not grouping them together so it's pretty jumbled up. Plex organized them just fine.

Each episode folder also has its own .nfo file

I have auto organize plug-in although when I click on it, it gets overlayed over the current content so I can't tell if and what it did.

Am I missing something or do I really need to rename and reorganize hundreds of files??

Thanks!

EDIT: Weird thing... One show (Bull) was recognized and organized with metadata. Everything else did not.

The preferred structure is:

\TV\Show Name\Season #\Show Name S01E01 episode title.mkv

\TV\Show Name\Season #\Show Name S01E02 episode title.mkv

\TV\Show Name\Specials\Show Name S00E01 episode title.mkv

I rarely have issues this way with over 1k shows/25k episodes...

I saw what the preferred structure is but coming from Plex and with the structure I already have (episodes just go into the TV folder automatically) is that really the only way to have it organized?

You can probably can get away with a few other structures  (I'll let others chime in) but the preferred one yields solid results.

OK... It is what it is. File name itself has all the information that is needed (show name, season and episode) so not really sure why metadata can't just be extract from that information.

Just a bit tedious that instead of the server automatically recognizing the info I need to go to Identify for each episode and simply search for show name, select it and then it's all good.

Fixing folder structure is not an insurmountable task. You'll be happy once you're done as it'll be much better organized.

On the othe hand, file naming could be daunting, depending on how many episodes you have. I suggest a nice little freeware program aptly called NameMyTVSerieshttps://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/rename-your-tv-series-files/ )that makes short work of it.

The fact that we are a little bit stricter with our file naming allows us to offer a lot more features (like multi-versioning).  We're always looking to make it more flexible though.

Appreciate that. It would be nice (I believe for most users) to have a simple and less strict file naming (or an option between the 2). That way users who don't need multi-versioning etc. could just make use of simple file structure and identification.

That was one thing I liked about Plex. It pretty much digested correctly whatever files you throw at it as long as it is under the parent Library folder, and sorted it accordingly.

Oh, so that's what I was doing wrong!

My libraries were neatly structured and file named as per convention, but Plex was struggling to identify half of my stuff correctly...

Hang in there for initial setup, you'll never look back, guaranteed!
