Emby Metadata issue - (unlike Plex)

i recently had an emby install, and tried scanning my media. Emby was unable to identify metadata for the below movies, but Plex was easily able to identify everything. I havent specifically renamed it in particular way.

Examples of the path:

  • /data/movies/The Edge of Seventeen 2016 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK/The Edge of Seventeen 2016 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK.mkv
  • /data/movies/War Dogs 2016 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK/War Dogs 2016 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK.mkv
  • /data/movies/Snowden 2016 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK/Snowden 2016 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK.mkv
  • /data/movies/Lion King the Trilogy 1-3 1994-2004 BluRay 720p x264 aac jbr/Lion King 2 1998 Simba's Pride.mp4

Any advice how i can make emby identify these movies, without significantly renaming the stuff around, would be greatly appreciated

Note: I have used plex sporadically over the last 5 years, and i rarely had a scenario where it wasn't able too fetch metadata for a movie i had watched.

Thanks.

Hi.  You will either need to make your folder names more closely match our guidelines (Movie naming) or use our manual identify feature to correct the mis-identified ones.

We support a lot more features like multi-versioning than they do so we require a bit more precise naming in some instances.

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was afraid you would say that!

Just a suggestion: Lot of ordinary users might not care about advanced features like muti-versioning, but they might see that nearly 30% of the movies are not identified by emby , but by Plex, and might be put of by that unidentified tiles in the library. I have been reading about Plex Vs Emby articles over the last few days, and everybody's number 1 comment is always the metadata issue. Just wondering whether you guys are aware of it.

And the No-1 compliment about emby is the quick support you recieve here, and thanks for that. Keep doing great work !

Checkout FileBot.

If you're willing to do some learning and playing around, it'll do all the work automatically for you - renaming and file organization - without touching a thing

These examples really ought to just work i would think.

Only by those that don't follow directions or guides for EITHER program. :)

Both Plex and Emby essentially use the same naming conventions and are pretty tolerable to variations but you have to make an effort to get close to it.  This is one of the "easiest problems" to solve as there are many utils such as filebot that will do the work for you.  You can run them via GUI or script them so they do the proper naming and even put the media in the correct place on your server for you.

Our scanning has also improved a lot recently and a lot of the comments I typically see are from people who tried us a while ago and haven't tried again lately.
