iOS 9.3.5 Subtitles

I have an old iPad Mini that can't go further than iOS 9.3.5. I have subtitles forced and the settings copied over from an iOS 12 device. The subtitles on the iOS 12 device work perfectly fine while the subtitles on the iOS 9.3.5 device don't even show up. Is there anything you can do about this?

Just the normal subtitles downloaded from OpenSubtitles. I believe they are srt files.
