Power outage plan to keep emby functioning.

So much as the title says i am trying to make myself a power outage plan that will allow me to keep emby working properly.

For background it is not uncommon where i live during hurricane season and or winter for power to be knocked out for a week or so at a time. I have my media server on a battery backup and a backup generator that powers several things around the house like the water pump, heating equipment the fridge and the microwave.

That being said even though my modem and internal network will be online after about 2 days of a power outage the internet normally goes down.

My emby clients in the house are all mi box 3's which i believe all have to phone home to continue to work properly.

Will i have to set up a temporary hotspot when there is an outage? How much bandwith will i need to ensure these devices stay working if they need to phone home?

For just two days you won't need to do anything

Ok, so on day 3 i should plan on having say a cellular backup i can at least turn on briefly so the clients can phone home? Week long outages are not uncommon and are why i have a backup generator.

It would then merely be a longer scan to build the database. Internal clients will still phone home if you are not using Emby Connect and may still do so anyhow. @@Luke would need to answer that one.

You've already got the answers you need but I'll add a couple of things.

Before bad weather arrives make sure you run/use each client so that it does authenticate and set the time back to ZERO giving you the most days available without the need to authenticate.  If you had a client that hadn't been used in say 2 weeks and power goes out you may very will experience a problem of some kind with that client since it hasn't authenticated in a while.  This is just a "heads up" move you can do.

Taking Emby out of this I think you would still want to prepare for having a hot spot over cellular ready and tested before you need it.  As the Boys Scout motto says  "Be Prepared".

Several ways to do this.  One is just turn on the hotspot feature of the cell phone but another way might be possible depending on your home router.  Many like the ASUS brand can allow you to plug in your cell phone via USB to the router and the router will then use this for while the main link is down.  This has advantages as you don't need to make any changes to your network or devices in order to still access the Internet.

The downside to this is that EVERYTHING has access to the internet so you can use up a lot of data quickly.  You wouldn't want a machine doing torrent transfers running through your cell phone.  You don't want MS doing updates. You don't want your computers updating adobe and java products, etc this way.

Of course you can turn a hot spot on and off at will and if using a cell attached to your router you can connect and disconnect this as well to control access.

So test a few different setups before you need it and be ready.

Carlo

PS I use a Honda 1000 watt generator for my main TV, Emby Server and routers.  It puts out the cleanest power I've seen from a generator.  Everything else uses the normal backup gen which is much bigger and "dirtier".
