Question about emby.app domain

Recommended Posts

Posted

I accidentally typed emby.app into my browser and it redirected to the Plex website.

Has Plex gobbled up Emby?

Try it for yourself and see.

I just tried it and got the same thing. That's underhanded and unprofessional.

It's because emby is taking more and more of their business.

Classic.. Domain squatting is so 2008.. I mean two thousand and late.

F̶l̶a̶t̶t̶e̶r̶y̶,̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶s̶t̶ ̶s̶i̶n̶c̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶m̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶i̶m̶i̶t̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶.̶ ̶P̶l̶e̶x̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶i̶n̶f̶a̶t̶u̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶e̶m̶b̶y̶.̶ ̶I̶ ̶m̶e̶a̶n̶ ̶w̶e̶ ̶h̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶s̶e̶r̶i̶o̶u̶s̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶l̶k̶e̶r̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶b̶l̶e̶m̶.̶ ̶R̶e̶s̶t̶r̶a̶i̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶r̶d̶e̶r̶s̶?̶ ̶M̶a̶y̶b̶e̶?̶ ̶B̶u̶t̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶b̶a̶b̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶ ̶p̶l̶e̶x̶ ̶d̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶s̶,̶ ̶b̶u̶t̶ someone who is very angry with emby and this is their form of "Punch Emby in the face" game. Albeit a game that is slow to ripen (purposely as this is revenge after all and revenge is the dish best served cold), and then glistens in the sun for its 15 minutes and they let the domain expire eventually as the game is played out. Then it falls into parking and the domain registrar squats on it. This is clearly a redirect not just parking, so its the punch in the face variety of insult.

Notice how many here are squatted on. Alot of these don't actually redirect to anything. Appear just to spin and have problems directing.

Now here you can see the difference. Emby.online would be a cool one to use for emby connect. Emby.fun can load up the forums and Emby.store for apparel. OMG.. synergy..

btw.. j/k :P

What! How would something like that happen?

I guess they feel Emby is some sort of threat to their business model of not helping their users on the forums or fixing their broken things or having a crappy DVR yet promote it like it's the best thing since sliced bread!

Excuse the rant but that just seems wrong and underhanded to say the least!

We actually dropped the ball on this last year when domain name registration opened up for the .app top level domains. We didn't purchase it on the first day, probably because we were in here helping you guys. By the second day it was already gone.

I talked to my sister who does that kind of law a few days ago. She said what they did was illegal

Plex has reached out to us to let us know that they are not the ones squatting this domain. I'm passing that onto you all here to prevent any mis-information from spreading. We will do everything we can to secure emby.app for ourselves. Thanks everyone.

FYI - I edited the title of this topic just so casual readers and search engines don't get an incorrect idea :).

I am almost certain that you can force the domain name to be given to you, there are rules about the use of a domain name that has the same trademark as an existing company.  This looks like it completely breaks them all, especially since it links to Plex.
