Arik36 0 Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 Hi, Thanks, seem to work, but not perfect. For some reason one letter is displayed as a square, the letter is ל (hebrew for L) Any idea? Screenshot attached. Thanks,
Luke 42077 Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 Ok at the moment I'm not quite sure. It's possible the subtitle font we're using doesn't have the character.
Arik36 0 Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 I'll try a few more subtitles this weekend and maybe try to play with the encoding, i will also try it on Mi Box 3 with android 8.0. I will update after. Thanks.
Arik36 0 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 O.K. So the problem is with EMBY for android. I installed both EMBY for Android and EMBY for Android TV on my tablet. EMBY for Android has that square problem with the letter ל (L). EMBY for Android TV does not have that problem. Don't know why, maybe you can figure ut out. I can give you an srt file as an example if you want. Best regards, Arik.
Luke 42077 Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 The mobile app is shipping a custom font for subtitles and it's possible we may need to adjust the font. Thanks.

Hi everyone, Sorry to barge in on you but new to Emby and still having the same one letter Hebrew subtitle issue as described above. Just installed Emby on PC and Android and it looks great, only this problem... Any progress on fixing it? Thanks.
Luke 42077 Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Unfortunately I don't know the answer yet. We are still researching how we can adjust the font we are providing. Thanks.

Luke 42077 Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 For the browser, please try Emby Server 4.1.0.9+ once available for your platform. Have you tried the latest update to the Emby Apple TV app with the new video player?

Luke 42077 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 yep, I connected through an android app on my mobile (xiaomi redmi note 6) and the subtitles are shown perfectly Ok let's look at a Roku example. Can you please attach the emby server log? thanks.
ebr 16169 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 I'm pretty sure this is a limitation of the Roku device. It doesn't support Hebrew language so cannot render subs in that language either. The only way this would work would be to burn them in. I guess we will need to put logic in the app to look at unsupported languages and force a transcode and burn in. @@speechles
speechles 2055 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 (edited) Yes. There are languages which cannot be represented correctly that render right-to-left with RTL markers in them. The Roku does not honor RTL or LTR characters (rtlm/ltrm) within text strings. To allow it we would need to reverse every string. The problem there is text in other languages, numbers, etc that render left-to-right within the right-to-left text. Think latin text within hebrew strings. For this reason it is very, very, (insert infinite verys) difficult to do this and keep every other language working correctly at the same time. Believe me I have commented on Roku forums about this lack of universal language support before. See here: https://community.roku.com/t5/Roku-Developer-Program/Right-to-left-RTL-Languages-Support/td-p/481075 That thread explains the difficulty of even attempting to cover right-to-left languages and doing it all correctly within causing damage to other languages. It is an near impossible task. And to cover every caveat is impossible. You have to live with little issues all over the place. Because of all these problems support for it internally is low. We can update our profile support for subtitles to understand that we cannot render the right-to-left languages and that will allow the server to burn these into the video so they can be rendered on screen. That much is possible. Edited March 24, 2020 by speechles
Luke 42077 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 First let's look at an example of a playback session just so that we know what we're dealing with, so please still provide the information that i requested. Thanks.
