justwondering 14 Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 I'd like a way to set the primary thumbnail image to the current frame during playback in the web interface. I have a library set to content type "Home Videos & Photos". Emby does a pretty nice job choosing a frame from each video to use for its primary thumbnail image, but sometimes I'd like to choose a different frame. I can do this manually by playing the video, taking a screenshot, choosing "Edit images" from the "..." menu, clicking the "+" button, uploading the image, and selecting "Primary" as the type, which replaces the existing image. If I want the image to be a full frame then I need to wait a few seconds for the web interface to disappear before taking my screenshot, as there doesn't seem to be a way to dismiss it. And then the image I save is in a different resolution than the automatically generated ones. So although it's possible to generate my own thumbnails, it's a bit of a hassle. Since Emby Server obviously already has the capability to generate a primary thumbnail from a frame of video, it would be really nice to have a way to tell it to do this from a frame chosen manually during playback. I'm thinking a little snapshot button could be added to the playback interface. Or if that's too obtrusive, hide it behind a "..." menu. A related request: It would be great to be able to pick which of the items inside a folder would be used for the folder's thumbnail. These are small issues but would be really nice for organizing collections of home videos and other media that can't be easily looked up in databases. 9 2
SikSlayer 249 Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 +1 I keep the application MetaBrowser around for this exact reason. It's been over a year, is this a complex thing to implement? 2

casedizzy 1 Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 I would like to chime in that I have always longed for greater customization of poster images. This is specific to the "home videos" libraries. There are 2 types of problems I run into: 1) Poster/primary images that fail to extract in ffmpeg because the video runtime is >10sec. Currently while setting up image fetching during library setup, Emby's dropdown menu allows for only 2 parameters thumbnails every 10 seconds, or at chapter markers . Suggestion: Add an option for 2, 5,...(n) seconds to allow poster/primary image generation for videos with a runtime of >10 seconds. 2) Or other occasions the video length is not an issue but Emby will select an unsatisfactory image (blurry, it's a closeup of some weird-O's face, shows only the intro logo, etc.). This can happen ofter and creating your own custom poster via a screenshot for each video is a pain for the aforementioned reasons. Currently, you have to delete the image, and then refresh image or metadata. And this cam allow for a situation where you get the same unsatisfactory image over and over again. Suggestion: In webview, under "edit image" add an option under the 3 dot menu "fetch new image." Emby would then randomly fetch an image from a different frame than what is currently displayed. For a user that does not want random, they could instead opt to finetune the timestamp/frame number that was chosen during the library setup. 1
