Emby Failed to Record

Here's a new one  :)

I have Emby set to record the ABC news at 5:30p and the local news following it at 6:00pm.  Emby almost always records these two programs without fail.

Today, using the Android TV client, I was watching a movie that started before the programs were set to record.  About 5:45 or so I happened to glance over at my HDHomeRun tuner and I see only one light on, indicating only one tuner was in use.  Hmm, that's strange.  So on my Windows machine I go to the dashboard and it shows nothing being recorded, but it did show both news programs on the schedule.  I then went to the guide and went to the listing for the ABC News program and told Emby to start recording it.  Emby flashed a message that a recording was scheduled, but the tuner status didn't change.

At 6pm Emby was supposed to switch to the local news, but nothing happened again.  So I shut down the Emby Server (actually, I had to restart the computer since Emby won't restart) and looked at the log and I see some errors in the log when the recording was supposed to start.  Hopefully these errors will give you a clue as to what was going on.

I don't know if my using another client to watch another channel before the recordings triggered caused this problem or not, but that is the only thing out of the ordinary I was doing.  Normally I am not watching TV when those two programs record.

I should also mention the Android client that I was using to play the Live TV was using an EXTERNAL video player (MX Player).  The internal player used by Emby does not do a very good job on my Android devices ... been that way ever since you switched over to .ts recording with no on the fly transcoding available.

Hmm, not quite sure what happened there. It almost looks as if the channel data from the hdhr changed and now it can't find the channel. Are you able to play that channel  using the emby web app?

Well, I didn't get a chance to check that.  I rebooted the server so I could load a fresh copy of Emby Server.  After doing that, within a few seconds the local news started recording (there was still about 15 minutes left) and Emby has behaved normally since then.

Tomorrow when I have more time I will run a couple of tests and see if I can duplicate the problem and come up with a specific set of conditions that cause it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have run some tests this morning and have been unable to duplicate the problem.  Perhaps it was a one time glitch.

I will run a couple more tests later on this afternoon and let you know if I am successful in reproducing the problem.

By the way, I have three HDHomeRun tuners on my Emby Server.  I have a Connect, Extend and Prime.  The problem occurred on OTA channels, so Emby was using the Connect tuner at the time.  It is the first one in line (lowest IP address), so Emby goes to it first.  I set it up that way because the Connect has status lights on the front to indicate when the tuners are in use, while the Extend does not.
