Cybergy 4 Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 I got it in my head somewhere along the way that I should be using VPN with Emby server if I am recording live TV (DVR function). After searching these forums for a while, I'm not certain that I heard that advice here. There is nothing in the Wiki about it. Seeing as my VPN is causing me grief accessing my Emby server for live TV, I'm wondering if I really need VPN? I do not have any plans to access my Emby server from outside my home network. All clients will be local or wifi.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Are you doing it for privacy reasons? What country do you live in? As far as I know DVR for person use is legal in most countries.
Cybergy 4 Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 Whitby, ON - same as you! I should update my profile... It was advice from my provider. They are possibly paranoid but I'm not entirely sure as it is an IPTV service I record, not OTA, etc.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Got ya, didn't realize it was an IPTV service. As far as I know there is no different between watching a stream versus recording it. Unless of course the stream is watermarked or something and you are redistributing it without prior consent.
Cybergy 4 Posted August 9, 2018 Author Posted August 9, 2018 Nothing that fancy. I'm just trying to cord cut before my current TV "deal" runs out next month. Frankly I can't stay awake half the time to watch the shows I want, so the DVR is great. And if I can do without the VPN, my life gets better.
bpbenich 10 Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 I use IPTV without a VPN and I don't see a reason for doing so. I would ditch the VPN for connection to IPTV.
Spaceboy 2573 Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 I use a vpn with iptv, currently it’s just for privacy so my isp can’t see what site I’m using, but with a previous provider it was essential to get around blocks put in place to protect uk premier league football.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 My old IPTV provider actually blocked VPN connections. Whole IP ranges from popular data center actually. I was running a dedicated server on Hetzner's network at the time and wasn't able to connect to my IPTV provider.
