Let's talk Transcoding

You are possibly playing something that doesn't need transcoding. Try lowering the bitrate in the app, to something like 1 Mb

in the app, would that be 'home network quality' or 'internet quality'

So according to this rather confusing thread... I can look on the Emby server during playback and see if it's transcoding etc ??

Or, you could just watch your content and not worry about it :).

Have you actually encountered an issue that we need to try to address or are you just anticipating one?

My transcoding does not seem to be kicking in, and I have choppy playback from my devices, so I'd say there is a problem.

Okay, if you've changed any settings, set them back to defaults being sure to include app-side bitrate settings (set back to "auto") and then try.  If you still are having trouble, try reducing the app setting for bitrate until you get smooth playback.

I reduced down to 1080p 8mb/s and it was finally smooth, I then checked for a transcoding log and there WAS one there, I scrolled through and saw 'NVENC' in there, so I imagine it is doing what it's supposed to.

So what is all this telling me, that right now I'm being limited by network speed ? If so, is that a server network limit or the one I am currently on (work)

More than likely, yes.

Does that mean that the 'auto' setting in the APP is not doing it's job properly ?

Hard to say but that setting won't be foolproof because bandwidth can vary depending on the connection type and quality.   At the time we test it, it could work at 10Mb but then in a minute drop down to only 5.

But which network, is not clear. If it were me (and this is what I do), I'd set a bandwidth limit in your user settings. In your case, with a comcast bandwidth of 12Mb/s (this can fluctuate), try setting it to 9 Mb/s and leave your app at auto.

That's probably good advice.

if you only have 12Mb up on your connection - this will not be sustained and that doesn't give you much headroom at all for outbound streaming.

This did the trick, thanks. Can NVENC decode HEVC ? It's not checked at default.

Your GPU can handle HEVC, but only two transcodes at a time.

Sweet it totally worked, now I can play my UHD's on any device it would seem. Thanks to everyone giving me a hand today !

One more thing to consider, is your transcode location. By default, it will be on your primary drive. So if you're going to be transcoding a lot, make sure it has enough space, and can keep up with the demand. I chose to use a separate SSD for my transcode location.

Also, If you're transcoding HDR content, the HDR won't be tone mapped, and the picture will be terrible. Development for this, is active.

yes, I noticed the color was off on the UHD's. I am using the default location for transcoding, the C drive which is an SSD but not very big, how much space does one need ?

So you'll want to make a separate library for your HDR stuff, until the server can tone map.

How much space will depend on what and how much you transcode. How much space do you have on the drive?

Not much, maybe 40 or 50 GB free. Why a seperate library for HDR stuff ?

That should be enough space, but be aware of it.

If you put your 4k and 1080 in the same folder, you can choose which to play. But let's say the the 1080 is 10Mb/s and you have your limit at 9Mb/s, the server will automatically pick the 4k to transcode. And then you'll have a bad picture. Using a separate library, you can either not allow your remote users, access, or at the very least, you can choose to play the 1080 and then that one will be used to transcode. Giving you a better picture, not to mention less work for the server :)

Ahh i see, good point, I guess I will be adding the BD files as well until they get the tone mapping sorted.

Doofus, how do you exclude certain libraries from reomte users ? Looked around in the server dashboard and saw nothing...

So then you'll be able to choose which library to watch from.
