Rename Files & Folders breaks Collection Assignment

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of renaming my movie folders and files.  I have to say, Emby does a great job handling the renaming and not thinking the movie is a new addition.  One issue I found though is that when i rename either a movie folder or a move file, the association with any collections is broken.  For example, if I rename Back to the Future to Back to the Future (1985), it no longer shows up in my "Back to the Future Collection".  The same happens if I rename the just the folder but maintain the file name.

Is there a way to preserve the collection assignments for renamed files and/or folders?

Collections are done based on file paths, so that's normal.  You'll have to just redo the collections or edit their collection xml file.

Thanks.  So the Collections themselves with their artwork, etc will stay intact.  That is not too bad then.  I was hoping to avoid having to redo all of the artwork.

aha - I was wondering what happened when a bunch of Collections disappeared (I had reorganized at the directory level)

Kind nudge for an enhancement request Collections be based on movie IDs

I find myself having to refactor directories quite often to keep my library semi-navigatible at the directory level as it grows (esp if I run into a need to mount sub-directories onto different drives!)

I’ve very appreciative moving files around doesn’t break my library in general 🙏🏼

This changes in 4.6 as Auto Boxset plugin is depreciated and server performs this task via library setting.  There are topics all over about the recent corrected issue of single item collection being created.

I’m not clear if we are talking about the same thing here.  I am not pointing to the Auto Boxset plugin.

I am referring to Luke’s comment:

and requesting an enhancement request to base Collections on object IDs rather than file paths.

Yes, the new beta stores the collection name/ID in the NFO for the movie.
