Apply subtitles to every version of a movie

I have 2 versions of movies: 720p and 1080p. Emby streams from 1080p versions by default. It automatically searches for subtitles regarding my choice of language.

 

When I stream from 720p version, it can't use the subtitles downloaded for 1080p. It is understandable.

 

But when I try to search and download subtitles for 720p version, it uses 1080p version to search for subtitles instead of 720p version. As expected, it also downloads them for 1080p version, not 720p version even if I selected the right version as source.

Hi, yes with the multi version feature this sort of thing is something that still needs to be worked out. Thanks.

It so sad. Emby is a great software. You barely need to go to library directory from file system while managing your library. This issue forces you to edit files directly.

I want to share my solution, though. You may change the subtitle file's name from ...- 1080p.srt to ...- 720p.srt. It should fix the problem.

Yes, that would be the quick fix for now.

 

The problem is we cannot just assume the same subtitle file fits each version as they could actually have different content.

Please don't read below lines if Emby just uses filenames to search for subtitles and does not check its contents. If not, there are my opinions about the issue.

 

I am not sure you understand the problem.

 

Not being able to use same subtitles for multiple sources is not he problem. The problem is, it does not search for subtitles regarding to chosen source and its content, where it uses the default (best quality) source.

 

I doesn't sound like big issue to me. Not to over simplify it although it is very complicated apparently, all it is going to be done is to pass the chosen source file to subtitle search functions instead of default selected source.

 

So that you won't need to assume sources have different content.

That's true, but I'd rather not create 20000 symlinks if possible. Would you consider adding some sort of naming scheme for subtitle files that indicates they match every version?
