Guest asrequested Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 @@Luke thanks for joining the discussion. @ Same procedure as every year: When only enabling decoding for h264 and then playing a HEVC file, everything is unticked again (With QuickSync). Back to the roots I guess :/ I would speculate that has to do with the errors that HEVC decoding is having. FYI, your CPU can comfortably handle the decoding of those files. 4k might be an issue, but you don't want to be transcoding those, anyway. So until ffmpeg gets dialed in, I'd suggest just using QS encoding.

And it's good to know, that my computer can handle these well and I'll be using QS with only h264 enabled - at least a little something And also I don't have any 4k material hehe What i7 do you have? Sorry for that mis-information. I have an i5-7400! Do you still think I should be able to decode HEVC with ease? Edited August 10, 2018 by MindBullet
Guest asrequested Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 That will still handle decoding a 1080 HEVC. How may simultaneous transcodes do you plan on doing?

For now I have usually 2-3 simultanous transcodes, max. 5, if people all watch at once For the HEVC error: Do you think reinstalling the MB server might help?
Guest asrequested Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 For now I have usually 2-3 simultanous transcodes, max. 5, if people all watch at once With that many transcodes you need to the iGPU. Your Nvidia GPU can only do two.

Waldonnis 148 Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 @@Waldonnis do you think we should just use dxva as the decoder with quicksync as well? do you think that will help here? I would say yes, but tentatively. On the backend, I think the QuickSync stuff is implemented with D3D anyway, so it should end up being the same "path". Where things might get counterintuitive is if there's a dGPU installed with the same capabilities (like my system). You wouldn't know which GPU was doing the decoding with dxva2, but that is only really a bad thing in two cases: 1) you definitely want it to be done by a specific GPU for whatever reason, or 2) you don't want to copy the decoded frames back to system memory. Since the latter (2) isn't true in Emby's case, the only issue would be the first condition...and I don't know how many people would absolutely need such a preference (time will tell, I suppose).
