Emby App on Xbox One playback issue

I know there is another thread with similar issues that I am going to describe, but the issues written about there seem different than what I am seeing and those are on an Xbox One X and I am on the original Xbox One.

Anyway, playback of any mpeg or .ts file results in the video pausing while the audio continues to play after about 20-30 seconds into the video. No other video file that is mkv or mp4 seems to have this issue.

I have tried this on several mpeg files with the same result.

Here is the server log from trying it a few minutes ago.

Can you try dropping the bitrate to force it to transcode? thanks.

That makes is playback correctly, however, the video quality is pretty bad, even at 720 when it's transcoding.

I was impressed that despite transcoding, skipping forward was fast. Usually that suffers a lot when a video is transcoding.

@@Luke - I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread for another issue I came across while using theater on the Xbox but it may be just a simple tweak of the code.

When you are playing back a video and get near the end so that the pop up appears allowing you to start the next episode, if you hit the back button at that point to not allow it to automatically continue the next episode it closes the current episode you're watching altogether. Another problem with that is that since you are so close to the end of the episode it marks it as watched and if you wanted to view that last piece of the episode you have to skip to the end again.

In the Emby Android TV app it doesn't work this way. If that pop up appears and you hit the back button on your remote it just removes the pop up, it doesn't stop video playback.

Right, either click the Hide button to dismiss that popup, or click Start now to move to the next episode. Back currently won't close it, although it's possible for the future.

This isn't really a problem if the server is following your resume settings, right? If you don't want it to be marked as watched when stopping near the end, then you would adjust the max resume percentage under server playback settings.

I wasn't saying that marking it watched is a problem in itself, just that if it happens without me intending it to happen is the problem. It is following my server side settings for resume. The fact that the functionality is different from app to app gets confusing because you tend to get accustomed to doing it one way in one app and that changes when you use a different app. It should be more consistent.

By the way just FYI in case this helps with the original issue of this thread. There is a playback issue that I can reproduce:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/61225-xbox-one-s-music-randomly-stops-mid-track/?view=getlastpost

I am currently working on resolving that and operating under the belief that resolving this will take care of some other things as well. Thanks.

Awesome! That would be great if it does that.

Please try Emby Server 3.5.2. If you're on the beta channel you'll need to wait another day or so. Thanks.

Will do. I am on stable, so I will update as soon as it's available and do some more testing tomorrow.

@@Luke - I just got a chance to play around with the Xbox One app since the update to 3.5.2 and the issue still exists. Video freezes about 15-20 seconds in while the audio keeps playing.

Again, this is only on mpg files, not mkv or mp4.

Ok. We probably just shouldn't direct play these.

Hmmm... I totally understand why that may need to be done, however, if you want feedback from a user perspective, here is my viewpoint:

This would cause me not to use the XBox One app since, within my network if I am watching a recording and want to skip commercials, transcoded video becomes super tough to do that with. It takes away from the playback experience and smooth ease of use. That being said, as I mentioned above, even with a transcoded video skipping was pretty fast on this App. That isn't always the case on other apps.

Additionally, the video quality suffered quite a bit when it was transcoded. It was more noticeable on the larger screen than when I am outside of my network and it's transcoding to my phone or tablet.

These are just my thoughts and viewpoints about it, so take it as you wish.

I am just trying out the different platforms I currently own since currently the Shield is doing a few wonky things since the Oreo update. I hope the next update fixes those but in the meantime I am looking for other solutions.

However, for me, if the convert feature mentioned in another thread were more flexible to allow a quick remux to the MKV format that would most likely solve the issue for me anyway. I can't use the convert feature in it's current state because it either takes too long to convert or uses too much cpu if I speed up the process. It is for this reason I don't currently use Emby for recording TV because the .ts and mpg file formats are just not friendly for my purposes.

Just my 2 cents...
