Luke 42077 Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 Are you still having trouble restarting the server?
csadoian 36 Posted August 11, 2018 Author Posted August 11, 2018 Are you still having trouble restarting the server? Yes, as are others. It hangs at the same place as I described at the beginning of this thread. It doesn't happen if you start the server and then shut it down and/or restart it shortly after it was started. I have not been able to come up with a specific set of circumstances (i.e. does it require just a certain amount of time after the server starts, after a library scan, after a scheduled recording, etc) so I haven't bothered you with it. I thought it was only happening to me, but others replied to this thread so apparently I am not alone. For the time being, if I need to restart the server I always assume I will have to reboot the entire machine.
csadoian 36 Posted August 11, 2018 Author Posted August 11, 2018 Luke, Ok, I just ran a "shutdown" test on my system. What I did was boot up the computer from an "off" state and let it load Emby. I then started a 5 minute timer. After 5 minutes I right clicked on the tray icon and told Emby to restart. At this point the process Embyserver.exe hung. So I waited about 2 minutes, saved the Emby log, and then rebooted the whole computer. I then did the same thing, except this time I waited only 3 minutes, and then told Emby to restart. This time it restarted fine. So I saved the log and have attached both logs here. Perhaps by comparing the two logs you can figure out if Emby ran a process in the 5 minute test that did not run in the 3 minute test that could be causing the problem. embyserver_3min.txt embyserver_5Min.txt
Luke 42077 Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 Can you try turning off both the dlna features as well as the automatic port mapper. Then restart the server. Then after that, see if the problem persists. Thanks.
csadoian 36 Posted August 11, 2018 Author Posted August 11, 2018 (edited) Can you try turning off both the dlna features as well as the automatic port mapper. Then restart the server. Then after that, see if the problem persists. Thanks. Port mapper was already off. I thought I had turned off dlna but it was back on, probably after I did a fresh install. Emby is recording something right now so I will get back to you later today. By the way, if you look back a little in this thread you will see I did turn off dlna and the portmapper with no difference. However, this was before I did a complete re-install of Windows and Emby Server. Edited August 11, 2018 by csadoian
csadoian 36 Posted August 11, 2018 Author Posted August 11, 2018 Ok, I ran the test again with dlna and portmapper disabled. No difference. Attached are the logs. I also attached a log of all the file handles that embyserver.exe has open, which may or may not be of help to you. I realize that since Embyserver.exe is stuck trying to shut down the HttpListener it probably never executes the rest of the shutdown sequence so it would follow all these file handle would be left open. embyserver_5min.txt Emby_handles_5 Min.txt embyserver_3 Min.txt
csadoian 36 Posted August 11, 2018 Author Posted August 11, 2018 (edited) One other observation (don't ask me why I did this): I have the Embyserver program running and I have NO clients running anywhere (including on the server). I then pulled the network cable on the back of server, effectively disconnecting it from my LAN and the internet. I then right click on the Emby Tray icon and tell it to exit. Emby really jams up then. Not even plugging the network cable back in seems to help. Granted, you are not expecting anyone to pull the network cable on the server, but why does Emby need network access to shut down? I'm thinking if there is a bad (or flaky) switch or router on the network it might cause Emby problems. Again, this is with the portmapper off and no DLNA functions enabled. csadoian 36 Posted August 12, 2018 Author Posted August 12, 2018 One other thing I forgot to mention ... my server has only two plugins that I installed myself. Backup & Restore, and Podcasts.
annisman 13 Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Let's hope this gives them everything they need to find out what's going on.
csadoian 36 Posted August 16, 2018 Author Posted August 16, 2018 (edited) Luke, I noticed that, after the latest patch Tuesday updates were installed on my computer, that I no longer seem to have the problem shutting down my server. Embyserver.exe no longer hangs when shutting down or restarting. I wonder if it was something in the patches that fixed it, or something on your end (I had been wondering if Emby was "calling home" as it shut down and was not receiving the correct response)? annisman 13 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 I'm thinking he means latest windows updates ?
csadoian 36 Posted August 17, 2018 Author Posted August 17, 2018 (edited) "Patch Tuesday" from Microsoft. The update rollups normally sent out on the second Tuesday of each month. My systems were current as of July 2018 Microsoft patches, and these NEW patches were automatically applied on Tuesday night, after Microsoft released them. For this month for Windows 7: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4343900/windows-7-update-kb4343900 and for .net framework: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4345590/security-and-quality-rollup-updates-for-net-framework-3-5-1-4-5-2-4-6 Edited August 17, 2018 by csadoian
Luke 42077 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 Well it wouldn't be the first time a Windows update has resolved an issue.
csadoian 36 Posted August 17, 2018 Author Posted August 17, 2018 Well it wouldn't be the first time a Windows update has resolved an issue. I will be interested to know if the others who experienced the same issue now see it resolved for them, also.
ryandavidg 30 Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 I will be interested to know if the others who experienced the same issue now see it resolved for them, also. I just checked my Windows 7 server and Emby now shuts down properly with no residual process - the interesting thing is I hadn't installed this week's Windows patches yet, about to do so now. Anyway, at least it's resolved I guess.
