Unable to Restart/Shutdown Server

I am not sure exactly which version this started happening, but when I attempt to either restart or just shut down the Emby Server the process EmbyServer.exe will just hang and will not exit.  Using Task Manager I can see the process, but I cannot kill it.  Nothing I do seems to be able to get the process to exit.  And since that process won't exit Emby will not restart.

The only way out is to completely reboot my computer.

It does not do this if I start Emby, wait a few minutes, and then tell Emby to shut down.  Nor does it do it if I start Emby, play some live TV on a client, shut down the live TV and then exit Emby.

It almost always seems to do it overnight, which usually includes a couple of scheduled recordings being done.

The last item in the log is "HttpServer:  Stopping HttpListener ....", so I assume that's where it's getting hung up.

I wish I could provide you with a specific set of circumstances that causes this to happen, but that's all I got at the moment.

Hi there, please try updating to Emby Server 3.5.1.

If the issue remains, can you try turning off the server's dlna features and see if this has any impact? Thanks !

That's interesting.  On my Server dashboard the version says version 3.5.1.0.

The log says 3.5.0.0.

What could be causing that?

I just turned off the DLNA features and will see if that makes a difference.

FYI I downloaded the most current version of Emby Server from the web site and ran the setup file with the server not running.  After the install was complete the log and the dashboard both show 3.5.1.

Apparently the automatic update did not correctly install 3.5.1.  Perhaps it had something to do with the server hanging at exit.  In any case, it appears I have a good copy of 3.5.1 installed.

I also have the DLNA features turned off for the time being ( I don't use DLNA anyway).  If I don't see any more problems with the server hanging when restarting or shutting down I will re-enable the feature to see if it was the cause of my problem or if the corrupted update was responsible.

Thanks for the feedback.

Luke, this morning I attempted to shut down the Emby Server and got the same result.  The log again stops at "HttpServer:  Stopping HttpListener ....".  Had to reboot the computer to restart Emby.

I have attached two logs ... one is the log similar to the one I posted yesterday, which is from midnight to the time I attempted the shutdown.

The other log is from yesterday which shows quite a few errors, which may or may not be significant.  Many of the errors appear to originate from the HttpServer.

Why do you think you had to reboot the computer?

Well, I didn't HAVE to reboot the computer, but I do so on occasion for various reasons.  Today I did it just to see if Emby would exit without hanging, and  it didn't.  This would be a problem if I had Emby set to automatically install updates, which I don't at the moment.

About twice a month I down the server and do a complete backup of the server computer to a USB drive using Acronis.

Also, there has been an ongoing problem with my server where Emby will not release a tuner when there are several overlapping events, such as having two or more programs recording simultaneously or in combination with viewing live TV with an Emby client.  When this happens the tuner light(s) will stay on, yet there is no recordings being done or live TV being viewed.  The tuners effectively stay "busy".  On at least one occasion this has caused Emby to miss recording a program due to the fact there were no tuners available, as far as Emby was concerned.  Thus, I have to reboot the server to get my tuners back.

I did mention this a while back but I was unable to give you specific scenarios that caused it, so I didn't follow up with you on it.  However, it does happen enough (especially on weekend when I record a lot of sports) that I end up rebooting the server about 2-3 times a week.  I used to be able to just restart the Emby program, but now I have to completely reboot the computer.

Anyway, you asked why I wanted to reboot my computer ... :D

If you give it a little time does it eventually shut down? You can also try turning off the servers dlna features.

Dlna is already off (see previous message in this thread).

Yesterday I waited an hour and the process never shut down.

The stuck process (embyserver.exe) will not respond to "End Task" from the task manager or from Process Explorer.

Try also turning off the automatic port mapper.

Ok, I turned off automatic port mapping, which I probably should have done a while ago since I don't enable uPnP on my router.

Luke,

Yesterday I moved my entire server to another computer in a effort to figure out why, after a variable amount of time, I am unable to shut down the server.

On the test machine (which has a new install of Windows 7 64bit Pro on it) I installed a fresh copy of Emby Server.  I then went through the guided setup and linked it to my account.  I installed my Emby Premier key, then I installed the Backup & Restore plugin.  After rebooting, I used the Backup & Restore plugin to restore from my last backup (by the way, it would be nice if scheduled recordings could be backed up and restored by the plugin.  It's a pain to have to re-enter all my scheduled recordings when I do this).

After a reboot of the server Emby refreshes the guide and scans my libraries, which takes a while.  After everything settles down it seems to operate smoothly, and I am able to shut it down and/or restart the Emby Server with no problems.  So I thought the problem was fixed.  This morning (I had done all this yesterday evening) I tried to restart the Emby Server program and it again hung at the  "HttpServer:  Stopping HttpListener ...." point again.  I waiting over an hour, and the process would not terminate, nor could I forcefully terminate it.  The only way out is to completely restart the computer.

Strange I seem to be the only one experiencing the problem, and that it did not go away after doing a fresh install on a completely different computer.

Trivia ... I did notice that after I did a fresh install of Emby Server the folder structure inside Appdata changed from what my old server had.  The older installation did not have the folder \programdata within the Emby-Server folder.  Prior to the fresh install, everything inside \programdata was in the \Emby-Server folder, along with the folder \System.  I assume you account for this when people upgrade from an older installation of the Emby Server?

Thanks.

Thought I'd point out that you're not the only one, see this thread:

It happens to me too, the EmbyServer process remains after 'shutdown' and only rebooting can get rid of it - also on Windows 7.

Ok, thanks.  I try to research the forums before I post, but I missed this thread (possibly due to the title of the thread).

Yes, that was a bit of a tangent on that thread  :D

Well there was a update to NET Core 2.12 that could require additional updates.

Is NET Core 2.12 supposed to be installed by the Emby installer?  I did not see it installed on either of my systems, so I downloaded it from Microsoft and installed it.

After installing it  "Microsoft Net Core Runtime 2.1.2 (X64)" is shown on the installed programs list.  It wasn't there before, and I don't remember the Emby installer saying anything about me having to manually install it.

Now that it is installed I will see if it makes any difference.

You shouldn't have to install the NET Core Runtime as none of my machines have it.

The question of whether Windows 7 is fully updated hasn't been answered?

I am installing Win 7 SP1 as VM, just waiting on 200+ updates on the first round of updates.  I know Emby will not run properly or all if updates are not applied.

I actually answered that a little further back in the thread.  In any case, BOTH of the machines I used for my Emby Server (the primary and my test system) run FRESH copies of Windows 7 Professional X64.  I did the install on the test system on Sunday, while my production system was done this morning.  In any case, after doing the install I then installed KB3020369 and KB3125574-V4.  The latter is the April 2016 Convenience Rollup and the former is require for the rollup.  After that I let Windows update do it's thing until there was nothing left to update.  Only then did I install Emby Server, and just to be sure I re-ran Windows Update after I did the Emby install.

As far as I know, my Windows 7 systems are fully patched.

Same for me I'm fully patched.
