diaz1510 154 Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 (edited) So I've been bothered by one small detail with emby since WAY back in the day. When dealing with images for TV shows, there is always a weird discrepancy between Thumbs and Backdrops. They are both represented in the same aspect ratio and in the absence of a Thumb, Emby always diverts to using the Backdrop. For a long time this was an issue for me as many of the Backdrops are the Card for that show. When editing images, most shows have nothing pulled in the Thumb. Before I knew that you could manipulate the position of the Backdrop image, I used to have go to Backdrop images, open the image I want, save it to a folder I have for metadata media art, then go into manually uploading that exact same image as a Thumb, then downloading it into the metadata for the show. Alot to do right? Yeah....lol.Well, then I discovered that by simply moving the backdrop image I prefer to the first position, it would be represented just as a Thumb would. Super Cool!! Here's the rub:The issue I always had before I used Emby Theater as my viewer (Iused to solely use the web client, before I got used to Emby Theater), the TV shows always showed the Show name as text overlayed the Backdrop Card, but not the Thumb Card. Well it's redundant if the show has the name on the card. So that forced me to do my long download-and-save-as-a-thumb process. Well, Emby Theater and the web client both handle Backdrops and Thumbs differently. I personally don't care how they handle it, I just wish it was consistent. In the web client, if there is no Thumb, but there is a Backdrop, there is no show text beneath the Backdrop Card, while there is show text beneath those that are using a Thumb Card. Below is a screen shot:Meanwhile, it is just the opposite in Emby Theater. If there is no Thumb, but there is a Backdrop, there is text overlaying the Backdrop Card, which, to me, is redundant and looks silly. Below is an example of the same library but in Emby Theater:Anyway, if I had a choice, I'd rather use the Thumbs, but most shows don't populate that image place. I wish there was some option to select the Backdrop Card, then have a check box or something to say "Treat As Thumb" or some way to copy it over to the Thumb image place.Or have an option to turn the text overlay/subtext on BOTH the Thumb and Backdrop cards on or off. That would give maximum customization to the end user.Anyway, at the end of the day, if you guys could at least make it consistent either way, that would be a step in the right direction. I personally prefer no text on any version of Emby as my Show image card always has the show name on it. But I may have to revert back to my old way of copying the backdrop image to a location on my HDD, then uploading the image as a Thumb. Edited July 26, 2018 by diaz1510
Luke 42085 Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Eventually the web app will be made to match what Theater is doing. Thanks.
diaz1510 154 Posted July 26, 2018 Author Posted July 26, 2018 (edited) OK, that's cool. But that leads me to the same issue as before. Any show not using a Thumb card but using a Backdrop card will show text overlaying the image. Look at the image I posted of the emby theater screenshot. Take for example the show "Alaska: The Final Frontier". That is a show using the Backdrop card with no Thumb card in the image gallery for the metadata of that show. The text "Alaska: The Final Frontier" is overlaying the image that says the exact same thing. I hate the way it looks. It's redundant and, frankly, looks silly. Meanwhile, the show right next to it "The After" is a show that has a Thumb card loaded into the metadata and it has no text overlaying the image. If I was able to "turn off" the text, that would give me the ability to continue just using the Backdrop images (which are more frequently populated) instead of saving and loading up a Thumb image. It would be a great solution for people that utilize the images as I do and still give others who utilize the images differently the ability to do it their way. Or I have to go back to opening up the image gallery for the show, downloading the image to a location on my server, then reloading the image manually as a Thumb card... Or am I missing something here and doing this completely wrong? Edited July 26, 2018 by diaz1510
Luke 42085 Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Any show not using a Thumb card but using a Backdrop card will show text overlaying the image. This is just something that we've always done because the vast majority of backdrops do not contain the name of the title. You can workaround this by making a Thumb image for that show.
diaz1510 154 Posted July 27, 2018 Author Posted July 27, 2018 That's what I said I've been doing all this time, it's super annoying to have to do, but I've been doing it. And you're wrong, a lot of shows actually DO have a backdrop image that contains the Show name, not all, but a lot do. And by simply arranging the Backdrop image with the show name into the first position lets Emby use that image as the Card it displays. This is a great feature...except that it populates text that overlays the image. Yes, I know I can create a Thumb image for that show, but it seems ridiculous when a show already has the proper image, just located within the Backdrop category instead of the Thumb category. Is there no way to add a select-able option to allow Emby to treat a Backdrop as a Thumb? Or an option to have text on or off? I just want a freakin option to turn off the text that is overlaying the image. Is there a line of code in emby I can go into and just do it for myself?
Luke 42085 Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 There isn't. More settings are possible in the future, I was just suggesting that as something you could do today to make it the way you want.
