Guest asrequested Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I'm going to be reinstalling my server machine, and I thought this would be good time to switch to Server 2016. Having never used a server OS, any tips from you guys about installing and configuring?
Guest asrequested Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 You mean Server Core? Possibly. The version I have, has that. But I'm not familiar with these. Are there advantages to using server core?
Luke 42077 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I'm not sure of advantages, but server core does not include some windows libraries that are needed by ffmpeg. Our installer doesn't yet account for that so you'll have to copy them in from a full windows server 2016 install.
Guest asrequested Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Good to know. I'll stick with the standard install. Probably Datacenter edition.
CBers 7450 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I've just upgraded the other way, Windows Server 2016 to Windows 10. I found quite a few pieces of consumer software won't run under Server 2016. You can get a Server 2016 licence off of eBay cheap.

I think I can use the software I want, but I'll check. Yeah, I can get a license for $25

CBers 7450 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 $5 should be sufficient That's all I paid for my licence. Getting to activate it is fun though.

CBers 7450 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Getting to activate it is fun though. I think the command, from a PS window, was: Dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /AcceptEula /ProductKey:PRODUCT-KEY
Guest asrequested Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I think the command, from a PS window, was: Dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /AcceptEula /ProductKey:PRODUCT-KEY Wasn't yours an evaluation that you bumped up?
PenkethBoy 2068 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 A lot of the cheap licences only come with a link to download the latest eval version from MS not real media images hence why the PS fix is needed 1
CBers 7450 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Wasn't yours an evaluation that you bumped up? Yes.
Guest asrequested Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Just bought one for $6. I've got several versions of the iso. Different builds, so if the one they gave me is eval, I'll try the others. I have a later version than the one they provided.
Guest asrequested Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 (edited) Ok, so I've got server 2016 up and running. Emby server installed, configured and running. My network shares are set up, but I've got a weird issue. I can't make folders in my drive pools. I can copy files to them, but I can't make folders. What am I missing? Do the pools have to be configured in some way? @@PenkethBoy @@CBers *facepalm* , somehow the drivepool license got deactivated. I wish it would give you an alert Edited July 29, 2018 by Doofus 1
CBers 7450 Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 DriveBender gives you 30 days trial on all installs.
Guest asrequested Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 DriveBender gives you 30 days trial on all installs. I already had the license activated. But for some reason, it got deactivated.
PenkethBoy 2068 Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 if you change things to much it will deactivate You changed your OS I got caught with a BIOS update - as it checks the bios version at start up
Guest asrequested Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Oh, yeah it might have happened when it upgraded the OS to the latest build. It was working before that. I had deactivated it before installing server 2016, and then activated it after installing.
Guest asrequested Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 One thing I hadn't considered before using server 2016, was that it wouldn't have all the drivers for the motherboard. There are no specific drivers for the PCI bus, but it seems happy with the windows 10 drivers.
PenkethBoy 2068 Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 consumer grade m/b with server OS yes you will struggle to find specific drivers unless your m/b vendor has them Win10 drivers will work in most cases as the OS code base is the same as 2016
