dancaswell 0 Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Hi, I have noticed that all HVEC content is transcoded when played on an iPad Pro and at moset HVEC is 4K it's quite a drain on my server. Plex does not seem to have this issue and will direct stream content without issue. I'd love to move over to Emby from Plex but this is holding me back, are there any plans to support this?
Luke 42077 Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Hi, we do, but only on iOS 11 and i believe we're currently excluding the main 10 profile. Can we look at an example? Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !
dancaswell 0 Posted July 21, 2018 Author Posted July 21, 2018 iPad is running iOS 11.4. I suspect the main 10 profile is the cause. Server and transcoder logs attached. embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-84b3eb69-b421-4ee5-a743-3d70f015c363.txt
Luke 42077 Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 @@dancaswell, would you mind performing a quick test. you can use emby user permissions to deny transcoding access for your user, then try to play the video again. This will force it to direct play. I'm curious to know how it performs. Once you're done with the test you'll want to set the permission back to default. thanks !
dancaswell 0 Posted July 24, 2018 Author Posted July 24, 2018 With only video transcoding disabled I have mixed results. Some titles direct stream with no issues. A few play fine but if you skip through the title it breaks the playback (mostly dropping the video frame-rate by about half) At least one title breaks from the beginning, audio is fine but video is looping the first few frames. All videos are 4K and play fine on Plex and VLC. I can post logs or do more test if needed.
RanmaCanada 494 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 On a side note, does your HDR work when you are playing your videos through Plex and Emby when you are playing 4k files?
dancaswell 0 Posted September 15, 2018 Author Posted September 15, 2018 On a side note, does your HDR work when you are playing your videos through Plex and Emby when you are playing 4k files? If the video is not transcoded, then yes. HDR Metadata is lost if the video is transcoded.
