Lack of multichannel audio has been a frustration for me, too. In my case, it has been due to everything being transcoded (which automatically drops to 2CH AAC).

That is not a true statement.  We can transcode (at least ac3) to 5.1 aac and this is what happens with the Nexus Player.

It is a true statement in my case. I used turning subtitles on and off as the trigger for transcoding once we were able to make it happen on demand (and did it with several different files).

Multiple files with DD 5.1 source all exhibited the same behavior.

Subtitles Off: Dolby Digital 5.1 output

Subtitles On: AAC 2-channel output (transcoded)

Same behavior on both a FireTV (not a stick) with latest stock firmware and a rooted FireTV on 51.1.0.1_user_510055620

EDIT: Output over HDMI in all cases - optcal not tested (don't know if that matters)

The statement of the reason your are not getting 5.1 being because the items are transcoded is the part that isn't true.  We CAN and DO transcode to 5.1 audio.  It just isn't working on the Fire TV and that appears to be because the Fire is reporting to us that it cannot handle it.  That is what needs to be investigated.

Fair enough.

Whether or not that's a limitation of the software (which I didn't say it was) or the hardware incorrectly reporting it's capabilities causing the software to transcode to 2CH, the end user experience is 2CH audio anytime something is transcoded for playback on the FireTV (in my experience).

The Fire app is awesome to look at...Great work in the design now all I need it to do is play my video files and stream my HDhomerun TV signals through it.  Right now it shows Video Playback Error Failed to Load Video. When trying to play recorded video I only get sound no picture. Same with live TV.

Here is the server log

Here is the transcoder log

Do you have a live TV transcoding log? That log is from a DVD folder

Where would I find that log? Sorry pretty new at this.

No problem. The same place you got the previous log.

Hope this has the information you need,  I went to the app tried changing channels  to generate information.

It eventually loaded for me. Since I'm not yet sure what the issue is, it's probably worth trying reverting the level 41 back to 40 (FTV only) to see if that resolves it for him.

Unfortunately, I can't really pop a quick release out with just that change in it atm due to all the other changes I have going on. It will probably be a few days.

I am also unable to play back any videos on the app. Since it was working before and I didn't check the forum in a couple of days I thought the issue was on my end.

I don't get 5.1 audio even though all my mp4s has ac3 5.1 as the second track. If I play a video, it automatically defaulted to the first aac stereo track. It direct play. If I change the audio to the second track the video starts to transcode. I get the same exact behavior with the plex app. The fire tv is definitely the one to blame :)

it is the fire TV i ended up going through their power down and reboot procedure after clearing out the cache files in MB and now everything is back and the birds are singing!

If that worked then my suspicion is not really the device or us - it is the HDMI handshake.  I've had this issue with my Nexus that is connected to a receiver that passes through the HDMI to the TV when it is powered down.  The problem is these devices never power down but the receiver (that understands 5.1) does.  So the device sees it is no longer connected to a 5.1 capable output and turns down its capabilities - until you recycle it with the receiver powered up.

I have the same problem with my NUC if it ever powers up while the receiver is in stand by.

I have seen several error reports resulting from people who have side-loaded the Google App onto their Fire TV.

You should definitely not do this.  Use the Fire TV version available on the device or at Amazon.com.

OK, I installed from Amazon store; so this is not the issue but I still only get PCM stereo not 7.1 or 5.1 even though one or the other is selected when I stream from my WHS2011 server.

Will we ever get HDMI pass-though for audio?

Thanks

I certainly hope so (at least 5.1 if not actual pass thru).  It works well on the Nexus Player (for AC3 or AAC tracks) but it appears the Fire is reporting to us that it can only handle stereo so that is what we are delivering.

With Emby for Fire TV is there any option to choose which Emby server you connect to (if you have more than one)?  If not how does the app decide?

If you use Emby connect, when you login you get a choice of which server to use. If you've logged in already, log out and log in again via connect.

If you don't use MBConnect, then you have to clear data to enable server switching.

You shouldn't have to use Connect or clear data.  Just be sure that you haven't configured the app to automatically log-in as a specific user.  Then, if it can find multiple servers, it will show them to you at start-up.

Actually nevermind on both. They are both transcoding because there is a subtitle track selected and the app has not yet implemented separate text-based delivery like a lot of the other apps have.

Hi Luke, i think this resolve a question i've been having

this refers to external srt subtitles? or Internal or both?

Hi I have this picture from a fire tv stick client, that means video playback is directstreaming(transmision Directa in spanish) with no transcoding at all??

because i concern about the rest of the text:

"ts 1.9 Mbps

Video: libx264

Audio: aac -strict experimental"

If the playback were from my android client, the text just will say "directstreaming" no more

Does emby for Fire TV work outside one's home network?

I want to take my Fire TV to another location and use it to access my emby server that is at my home. That is, in fact, the primary purpose for buying a Fire TV. Does that work?
