Looking for guidance and suggestions

I'm a long time emby server user with WMC.  I'm wanting to go to 4K and HD audio (I know, way behind) and from the research I've done I think this setup will work:

ReadyNAS (or another brand of NAS open to suggestions)

Emby server continues to run in Windows (running on a Mac Mini 2011)

Nvidia Shield TV as a client

Does the server actually do the transcoding or does the Nvidia Shield?  My concern is that the Mac Mini that I have will not pass 4K through the HDMI (only 30hz).  How would the Mac Mini connect to the NVidia (network)? Just wondering what setup would best to work with the NAS and the Shield TV.  Should I run emby server on the NAS instead with this setup?

I thank everyone for their suggestions and input.

Hi, the server will do the transcoding, although the Shield is capable of playing quite a few formats without any transcoding.

As far as which device to run the server on, I guess I would choose based on which one has the better CPU.

Great thank you.  As for using the NAS as a DVR, will the Emby app for the nvidia play back recorded items from sling tv?  Or will it just record / play back live tv?

I'm not sure. Does sling save dvr items as plain video files that other apps can access? My guess is no.

Thanks for the help!  Any NAS suggestions?  I see that Emby has great integration with Synology - I was leaning towards that.

Synology and QNAP are both great options, but so are newer Asustor models. There's lots of great choices.

Which NAS did you end up going with?  Are you running the server on the NAS or not?  How'd you find it?

I'm looking at possibly moving the server to a NAS as well.  Don't mind the $s, just want the best one that will make life easy managing Emby.
