Subtitles not working when playing offline files

I was recently on vacation, and had synced some series to offline through the Windows app. When playing the videos in the app, I could choose between subtitle tracks, but none were displayed. When I located the video files on file system, and played them with VLC - the subtitles displayed correctly.
