TheShoe 1 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 hi - thinking of trying emby as an alternative to plex as plex does not support dsf or mvc 3D does emby at this point? can not find concrete answers in the forums on either. thanks
TheShoe 1 Posted July 1, 2018 Author Posted July 1, 2018 i want to use the server to scrape the media properly and then render on various devices. i am ok with transcoding as many devices will not support these formats, but plex won’t scrape dsf files for example (my main driver here as i have a huge dsf library) and mvc playback on atv 4k with plex, while it should render in 2D, does not play at all. in terms of devices: PC (custom built running windows) would hope 3D MvC works here. dsf will need to be resampled i expect nVidia Shield tv. ATV4K ipad iPhone would be great if you also support madvr+lav as then you likely support mvc 3D in an mkv container on PCs at least
Guest asrequested Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 The Theater desktop app would be what you'd want to use on your PC. mpv is it's native player, which presently doesn't support 3D playback of MVC media. You can use MadVR with an external player.
TheShoe 1 Posted July 1, 2018 Author Posted July 1, 2018 thanks. so does emby server read dsf tags and scrape the files properly? and does theater desktop also support mvc 3D or would that require madvr and an external player?
Jdiesel 1431 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 (edited) and does theater desktop also support mvc 3D or would that require madvr and an external player? No Emby apps support MVC out of the box anymore. Your options are: Emby Theater with an external player using LAV and madVR MVC supported Kodi client with one of the Emby plugins One of the few Android devices with MVC support (Zidoo, HiMedia, etc) and their internal player setup as an external player Edited July 1, 2018 by Jdiesel
TheShoe 1 Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 so does emby scrape the tags in dsf (dsd) files? and does it playback dsf or at least transcode it on playback?
TheShoe 1 Posted July 16, 2018 Author Posted July 16, 2018 *bump* no one knows if it will properly scrape the id tags in a dsf audio file? plex at least sill transcode but it will not scrape these files.
Luke 42078 Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 dsf is not the most commonly used audio format. Have you tried it? Can you provide sample files for testing? Thanks.
TheShoe 1 Posted July 16, 2018 Author Posted July 16, 2018 you can download sample files here: https://www.oppodigital.com/hra/dsd-by-davidelias.aspx i think they have some id3 tag info but if not you can add as you would wih mp3. basically the tag structure and format are the same between dsf and mp3 i have hundreds of dsf files. jriver and (i think) kodi will parse the tags.
Luke 42078 Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 I downloaded a couple from crossing and it was able to get the metadata, so looks like it works just fine.
Guest asrequested Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 For what it's worth, mpv has no trouble playing those. TheShoe 1 Posted July 20, 2018 Author Posted July 20, 2018 spectacular. thanks for both confirming the metadata is found and the playback support is there. bye bye plex
Guest asrequested Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Remember that for MVC, mpv will play them, but not 3D. They are making a lot of changes, lately. They seem to be getting very serious about getting everything dialed in. Once they get all the backend cleaned up, it wouldn't surprise me if they start getting things like this working, too.
AVRider 3 Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 I have researched the community forum and have found only bits and pieces on .dsf audio files. Specific to W10, my experience has been that Emby will play all dsf files. However, all files are transcoded. All files are transcoded to aac according to the log. My PC has a direct (not on the network) USB connection to a DAC (DSD capable), and then in turn output to RCA L & R input jacks on my Denon pre-amp. Foobar will play these files natively. In Emby, is it possible to have these dsf files transcoded to flac instead of aac ? If so, how? DLNA would not apply, correct? Thanks in advance.
Luke 42078 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Hi there, what emby app are you playing from?
AVRider 3 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Good morning. I am running the server v4.5 on W10 via Chrome. I am referencing the ffmpeg log which indicates transcode to .aac and the on screen message within the device (Chrome) that indicates "transcoding". Thanks
Carlo 4561 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Hi, What client are you using for playback?
AVRider 3 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Sorry. I'm not sure I understand the question? I am on my W10 PC and choosing within chrome localhost:8096 the tracks. It is the Home Screen option that I first choose my Music library.
Carlo 4561 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Your client in this case is a web browser (Chrome). To the best of my knowledge Chrome can't play dsf media so the server would have to transcode these files. If you have a Premiere license you could try Emby Theater on your PC which can play a lot more types of media directly then a web browser.https://emby.media/emby-theater.html
AVRider 3 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Thanks for the clarification on client. My original question is this. Knowing that this file type is transcoded upon playing - how can I force the transcode to flac? Currently, aac. Is Chrome performing the transcoding in my example?
Carlo 4561 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 It's not possible for you to choose the format it get's transcode to but is determined on the Server based on different criteria and programming. Is there a technical reason you would prefer flac over AAC?
AVRider 3 Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 prefer flac over aac due to significant difference in sound quality. Is there another client I could use that may address this?
