Paul77nz 8 Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Sorry if this has been answered before, but I can't find it if it has. I have multiple versions of some movies (e.g. Theatrical Cut, Director's Cut, 4K Ultra HD) and I would like to set a default version. I had thought it was just sorting alphabetically, however it always puts 4K HEVC files at the top of the list regardless of what the file is named. Thanks
ebr 16185 Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Hi. The default will be selected based on the device doing the playback (it will choose the one that is best supported by the device). This feature was really designed for different resolutions/encodings of the same item. It can be used for the purposes you are but does have this type of shortcoming.
Luke 42081 Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Yea if you're using multi version for this purpose then there is currently no way to set a default but it's something we can look at for the future. Thanks.
Paul77nz 8 Posted June 18, 2018 Author Posted June 18, 2018 (edited) Thanks for the responses @@ebr and @@Luke I'm using versioning for both different cuts of the movies and also different encoding/resolution. If the device is choosing the best version, I'm still not sure it is working correctly in all instances: In one room I have an Xbox One S connected to a 1080p non-HDR TV; however it selects the 4K HEVC (with HDR) file as the default, even though there is a 1080p H264 SDR version available. Luke 42081 Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 Currently the app thinks that it can play that, so that's the reason why that happened.

So it's not picking the most appropriate version to play. The Xbox itself knows it's connected to a 1080p SDR TV - can Emby be made to access that information to make a better decision on what version to play? Thanks
Luke 42081 Posted June 19, 2018 Posted June 19, 2018 We're currently not incorporating hdr information into the decision making. It's something we can look at for a future update. Thanks.
hoonlight 18 Posted January 4, 2024 Posted January 4, 2024 (edited) Hi, Is there an update on this issue? emby always selects the HDR version of a file when it has a 4K HDR version and a 4K SDR version. It looks like emby doesn't check if the display supports HDR at all, is that correct? Playing HDR content on an SDR display does not display colors correctly, so we need an option to choose the default version beforehand. Of course, it would be even better if emby could detect whether it's an HDR display and automatically choose whether to play SDR eternal or HDR content. Edited January 4, 2024 by hoonlight
