Best is the Best Cable card / Tv Tuner to use with Emby

Hi Gang

I am finally ready to buy a tv tuner to get live streaming functionality with my Emby Server

 

What is the best tv or setup to use if i currently have a tv provider - Verizon FiOS

 

What are some of your configurations??

 

Eventually i want to ditch the cable TV part of my bill and just Keep the gig internet

yep.  doing the same.  The HDHR is a really nice product.  I've gotten rid of all my cable boxes, canceled DVR, stuck a $7/mo cable card into the HDHR and have not looked back for over a year.  Plan to dump cable completely when this contract is up in 5 months, which can't happen soon enough.

That depends on which HDHR you have.  I have the OTA (antenna) model.

I am also using an OTA model, it works with dual tuners that allow two channels to be streamed to the TVs and other clientes simultaneously.,

For existing cable subscriptions a hdhr prime is the way to go. If you cut the cord you will need to switch to a hdhr extend or similar and use a antena.

Only other thing i can think of is the hdhr dvr and plex, but plex doesnt really do live tv and the hdhr dvr thing is subscription based.

I bought a panda at indoor he antenna with booster (range is supposed to be 65Miles)

But I can only get 6 channels and I noticed other a claiming 50-70 channels

 

What indoor or even outdoor antennas do you recommend ?

I used a Mohu Leaf antenna for a while and it worked ok. Got tired of the flaky channels becoming available then dissapearing, so I put a ClearStream 4 Indoor/Outdoor HDTV Antenna with Mount ($90 on amazon) in the attic, connected it to a HDHR Extend, plugged that into our network and managed to pick up an additional 7 channels!

 

I would start by going to antennaweb.org to see what you would need to get for your area. It will show you what is available with different types of antennae, placement needs and direction of the signal.

You can make your own outdoor antenna easily (assuming you can use basic tools) that works better than commercial antennas at 1/3 the cost.  I make and sell them locally (don't ship them) and would be happy to help you out.  Different areas need different antenna types depending on:

Your location to towers

Your distance to these different towers

The band each channel uses (vhf-lo, vhf-hi, uhf)

 

Shoot me a PM with your ZipCode so I can get a rough idea of the channels available in your area and I can certainly help you build one or recommend a commercial antenna that will do the job.

 

PS antennas with amps are usually junk unless it's a big name brand.  The specs (dB) are highly inflated and meaningless.  Amps do not add to the signal quality, they simply make up for losses after the amp such as cable length, splitter, tuners etc.  The signal will never be better than what it receives so a quality antenna mounted at proper height and location is key.

I have FIOS.  I was trying to do the cable card thing via WMC and using Server WMC > Kodi on my Fire Sticks  It just became a headache.  I dropped the cable card and sent it back to Verizon  

 

Is WMC still required or can everything be natively done through the HDHR Prime now?  My end goal is to be able to watch my FIOS channels via the Fire platform (Cubes and Stick's) both at home as well as remotely when I'm on the road for work (which is every other week), preferably through Emby as the front end.

 

I'm probably going to give the Fire TV Recast a shot for local channels, since more often than not hockey games are blacked out from streaming.

I might be getting hdhr prime confused with the subscription service that hdhr has.

Using a emby server to record and such will be fine for anything non DRM. I havent used a firestick in a while so i dont know what their capabilities are these days as far as what they can direct play and such which can make a difference on server requirements and streaming and such, but with emby premier you can also set it up to convert things to a more playback friendly format. 

I hope you have a hdhr device they are harder to come by right now until they release the 6 tuner version lol which has been coming soon since about mid year.
