Test speed between Roku and MBS

Does anyone know how to test the speed between the roku and the media browser server?

What are you wanting to test? Like the speed of the connection or the speed of the video connection or what?

Speed of connection to the server pc and videos on the hdd.

Don't know how to check to the MBS machine but there are channels that allow you to test with Speedtest.net. Like this one - http://www.rokuguide.com/private-channels/speed-test

 

Won't give an exact match but should be close enough to see what your network can handle. I use 20 Megabits on my Roku with MediaBrowser. However it is wired directly to the switch of my Gigabit Ethernet.

You could always ping the Roku box from your server. It should tell you if there are any delays. I also have mine maxed out for bitrate, but it is also wired to a gigabit switch.

In trying to find out how much faster mb3 will be with ethernet vs wifi. My current wifi connection usually shows at least 100mbps if I put the laptop where the roku sits.

Not sure the best way to test. Other then take a look at the server logs maybe. See how long it takes to say fetch the movies. There should be something like this in the log:

 

HttpServer: HTTP Response 200 to [::1]:51558. Response time: 6.0067 ms

 

So I'd suggest loading up the MB client. Going to the home page. Hover over the movies icon. Then delete all logs on your server and then go back to the Roku and click on the movie icon. See what the log says. You should be looking for something along the lines of:

 

HttpServer: HTTP GET http://localhost:8096/mediabrowser/Users/7f953d50343d9d967a8dd089c61f9be2/Items?SortBy=DatePlayed&SortOrder=Descending&IncludeItemTypes=Movie&Limit=100&Recursive=true

 

That is just an example. "IncludeItemTypes=Movie" should be the main thing to look for.

 

Do the same for both connected and wireless. See if the times are different.

Speed differences will depend on a number of factors... Asynchronous communication, interference, radio power, wireless standard used, etc...

 

Generally speaking a switched wired network will be faster, even at 100 megabits/second. If your Ethernet is supposed to be Gigabit, make sure your using appropriate switches and there aren't slower devices on the same switch. Even at 100 megabits/second, your wired network should be able to stream to 3 or 4 Rokus at maximum bitrate.
