New Server Build - Not grabbing People images for anything new

Recommended Posts

what happens if you click on the 'blank' actor on the server?  do you get the wikipedia details with a picture?  I have a few movies where on one of my machines (running mbt) I do not get any actor images, however the image shows up on the actor 'details' page.

Strange thing is, these movies display the actor images fine on the server and in mbt that is running on the server machine.

So I dunno what is going on.  Interestingly enough, Jennifer Lawrence is one actor who does not show up on the problem machine, regardless of the movie.  Again she appears on the detail screen and on my other machine.

I dunno.

Since I built my new media server last weekend, I've been struggling to figure out why the IBN folders are remaining so empty.

I've run the refresh people so many times, but it is simply not grabbing any images. Out of 45000 people, i've got just a few hundred.

If I add a new item, say a new movie to my libraries, it's grabbing all of the metadata, but it isn't grabbing any images at all... and these aren't images for unknown actors, these are the top A Listers out there.

Added American Hustle... no actor images at all for Bale, Lawrence, Cooper, Adams and so on and so on.

I've tried resorting to 3rd party apps, but they simply don't work and were a waste of money... All I ended up with was a few thousand huge images that were in the wrong ratio... I mean who needs a 14mb actor image... let alone 3GB of actor images for the letters A-C... which is were I killed the app.

It's not just movies either... Every single TV show had zero actors until I manually went through shows A through C and manually edit each and every one... I won't tell you how long it took, but it was far too long.

It's become very frustrating, I tried resizing images, but because a lot of them are in the wrong ratio they just end up squished and looking even worse.

So why isn't it grabbing any images when it's clearly set to do so, and when those actors are definitely available to the fetchers.

I wish we had better control over People... like the ability to tell it not to add "crew" to the list, or there was a reliable way to get the images that are available.

I can't even access the images from the old system, because it was a really old system and I was using an IDE drive for the OS, and the new MB doesn't have IDE connectors... The only thing I might be able to do is grab the old external hard drive I left at my folks house with a few movies on it... and take the IDE drive out of that, substitute for the one I have here... and then copy over the actor images that way.

But all of this is far too time consuming when it should be doing this already automatically (providing images exist)... We're not talking a few hundred missing images, not a couple of thousand. We are talking between 15-20,000 images at least... Images that are available and that the old media server managed to download just fine using the built in metadata grabber.

Help me sort this out before I pull my hair out.

Beat me. But adding a new movie, verifying it has metadata, running the refresh task and then posting a log would be a good start .

@@foghat  I'm getting nothing at all. I can go into and edit and it will sometimes grab the wiki data and a picture... but often it grabs some wiki info but no picture, yet when I go to both imdb, thetvdb and moviedb... there are images available.

If you use the 'identify' feature, it rarely works unless all the data is pretty much populated already... and if by some chance you check for images and there are more than one... you have to check 'All Languages' for some of them to show up, it just leaves a blank hole in the list of images shown.

I've also got a problem with studio cleaner not working at all... Need to post up about that in the correct forum though.

Which log do you want? Because I added a movie a few hrs ago

Meant to post this one too.

This is after I went through and deleted all the incorrect ratio and huge files that the 3rd party app had downloaded, and after I ran what was left through fotosizer to get everything that wasn't already under 500x333 pixels.

Of the potential 45,000+ images, there are just 2809 after the purge of the crappy files from the 3rd party app and the resize...  I'm left with 120mb of image files that are the perfect size for viewing in MBC... before I cleaned it up it was more like 3GB.

I only have a 120GB SSD for the OS and MBS files inc appdata, and I love the speed at which it can access all this data... MBC loads in a couple of seconds, and the EHS is fully populated a couple of seconds later, entering a movie folder with some 900 movies in it alone, everything loads so fast and smooth... I don't want this small SSD clogged up with things that don't need to be there... and any acor image above 500x333 and roughly 100kb is excessive in my book... 45,000 @ 100k is more than enough thanks.  :)

Bollocks... I just refreshed the movie.... D'oh.

Let me do it again and post the log.

@@Luke   you can't refresh 'people' from the movie edit page... Or do you mean a refresh people from the scheduled tasks?

If it's the latter... I'll probably need to add a new movie again as the Walter mitty one has been on there since yesterday.

@@Luke  OK, I did a refresh people and here's the new log (i'd restarted the server to install and update of studio cleaner, so it's much smaller this time)

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12595174/Media%20Browser%20Stuff/server-63531636950.log

I had a look at the log and saw a few things, it mentions that it was saving Steve Conrad and James Thurber to the IBN folder... So I went and checked, no image present for either... Checked in the movie data and they're crew rather than cast...

All of the other actors in the list are already present in the database, so it looks like it was just adding those two new ones.

I need to find a new movie to add that has actors I don't have in any other movie... but who do have images available to the fetchers.... Because if they're already in the list, and a picture is available... it should already have the image... So is the grabber skipping over them or something?

I'm just speculating at this.  :)

Been doing some further testing within the dashboard metadata grabber...

Some actors have details about them, but no images, others just require a refresh even though there was no image in the IBN folders at all or details.

Others need names adjusting within the TV show because they don't match the names used on IMDB/theTVDB/MovieDB... This one is a pain, because there is no easy way to adjust it at once. You have to enter the show and edit the people name, then go back and redo the individual actor details... You can't update them both from within the show/people metadata info. Would be great if you could do that, It would make updating so much quicker.

When you edit a shows metadata and hit Refresh, with refresh all data selected... Is it supposed to refresh the actors too?  Because if it is, then it's broken for me entirely.

@@Luke if you can confirm which log you want... and if you want me to generate a fresh one... IE... restart the server allow it to go through it's initial scan, then add the new movie and see how it populates metadata... and then adjust it as needed to take account of GB ratings and so forth... But without making any changes to actors at all.

I'm adding new shows all the time, but these are already populated with data and probably won't give you the info you require.

and then did you refresh people?

Good day,

I am testing this at the moment, the test as:

I do not have any titles for the actor:

Charles Chaplin

So adding dummy folder for the title:

The Great Dictator

I did library scan, then the result as you see:

@@Luke

In some tests, I found out, the library scan will not finish the job to get the actor image, it need to do manual refresh on the actor edit page:

Here the server log for that test:

Not sure if this will help, but I had the same problem on Windows 7 (64-bit). It worked fine when I made a images folder in a different directory and defined it in the admin panel and then refreshed. Took awhile, but everything downloaded for my movies. I only have about 180 movies in my DB, but it might be worth a shot to define your own images directory. I currently have a secondary drive and basically defined as so:

D:\Movies

D:\Images

D:\Temp

etc...

Just FYI, I also unchecked "Save artwork and metadata within media folders".

I've just changed all the media library locations from local to server mapping... It's now scanning everything from scratch again. Then I'll do some more checking.

If that doesn't help, I'll try your suggestion @

Heckler

Well it's still not grabbing actor images and to make it worse...it's now stopped grabbing data for movies entirely. I added 2 new ones today, and refused to grab any data for either... Yet will grab TV episodes just fine.

About to try @ suggestion... but 1100 movies and 11000 episodes and 120GB of music... this is gonna take all night.

OK... this is just ridiculous now.

I'm trying @ idea now @@Luke  and this is what I see....

It's creating all the folders as I watch it... it's downloading artist metadata and images... it's creating folders under people for actors... it's filling those folders with nothing... Think of a famous actor who's image and details you know are available and I'll show you an empty folder.

Same for studios... nothing gets downloaded

Something HAS to be broken somewhere... I've posted logs, I've tried every suggestion posted... Nothing is working at all... and it's really starting to irk me. It's a brand new media PC, a brand new install of windows and a brand new install of MB server... and it's not worked right from day one.

It's set up exactly as it was before... I'm quite meticulous about getting everything as I like it... I know for certain that this is set up correctly... it just doesn't work.   :(

OK... noticing something very weird here... it's adding the odd person... and by odd I mean 1000 max out of over 50,000

As I go through them... the only people it's grabbing have been in TV shows, if they've also been in movies they show up there... But it's exclusively getting people who are in TV shows, and even then it's still random who it's grabbing. I know for a fact that all of the actors for the shows I have are fully populated with images on the fetchers... It's just not fetching them.

Firewall is open to allow MBS access, as is evident because it's grabbing the odd random image.

I've been trying to solve this for a week... I need help with this because it's driving me nuts.

Well, I have some good news... I left the refresh people running overnight, it's been running for about 14hrs now and is still going.

But I am seeing a lot of actor images now, so it does appear to be working.

But this creates another problem... I have now moved the Images folder onto a seperate drive, a mechanical drive... a green drive.  I've already noticed a delay in images showing up due to the much slower drive. I'd rather have the folders on my SSD.

Do you think there would be a problem moving the entire images folder back to the ssd and either overwriting the originals, and adjusting the server to use the default again... Or moving the folders to a new location on the SSD and pointing the server to that instead.

Now that it appears to be working, I really don't want to break it again.

One last thing... I am seeing rather a lot of images that have the red warning triangle on them... There seems to be an issue handling names with   . '  characters in them.

For the next release and in the current beta, behavior is improved to help with this.

When scanning in new titles, even if you have existing metadata we'll still go out to the internet to try and pull in people information.

Also, when opening individual person detail screens, there will be some on demand refreshing to attempt to fill in metadata for people that don't have any.
