Morning everyone,

In location #1

1 x tower - unRaid - 20TBs

1 x tower - running emby server (FX6350/Windows 10)

Lets get out of location #1, my internet speed is not great for streaming 300mbps/20mbps, it can do SD but when it comes to HD content there are issues. So I was thinking maybe I should preload the content into my device before watching. What device would you guys recommend? Pre loading HD files into a phone would be a bit weird, since some of the files are easily 20-30GBs, when it comes to TV shows it is a bit easier since those are closer to 2GBs. However if I can have the file preloaded onto the phone that means I can easily use a chromecast at say my cousins house or mothers house.

Should I use something like an nVidia Shield instead? Preload the files onto the device, launch emby player and plug device straight into the TV using an HDMI cable?

The foolproof solution would be another tower, preload the content, start emby player and connect it to a tv via hdmi. However that is not portable friendly.

My files range in quality from crappy SD for some cartoons and full bluray rips. The bluray rips are great for my movie experience with my 5.2 surround system but not critical when i am on the go (cousins or mothers house).

Am i looking at this the wrong way? Should I just use a different method to transport files like say utorrent from my PC to my nvidia shield and use any media player? I was hoping to create an easy user experience. I am hoping to share my cartoons with my nephews.

I really like the emby interface. Also when it comes to the licenses, I don't forsee myself exceeding devices limit but what about location limitations. If I plan to watch content at home, at my mothers place, and cousins house. Will i be needing to buy three licenses, it's not a problem but just wondering what I will need to pay.

IMO that's the wrong approach.  The correct solution is to have multiple versions of your media, the original high bitrate for local viewing, and a converted version for streaming externally.  In emby, you then choose which one you want to watch based on your location.  Just make sure your conversions fit within the contstraints of what device(s) you're using to view the media as well as your available bandwidth.  ie, if you find that your server is forcing a transcode of a certain file, find out whether its the bitrate, audio, subs, or whatever, and fix the reason(s) in the conversion.

20mbps should be fine for most content unless you've got original blueray rips or 4k stuff in your library, which would have to be converted.

Also, are you finding that your server is just not powerful enough to transcode?  If so, upgrading is also a possible solution.

You can store stuff locally I suppose, but it's a hack rather than a fix, and kind of defeats the point of having a streaming server.

If you are an emby premiere subscriber, using sync (download) on your phone/tablet will give you the option to demand a lower bitrate, so smaller, file, and the server will get it done for you.
