And I've just remembered that I have some Intel X540-T2 10G NICs, laying around. So the pfsense box is going to have one of those

I think that's one of the things I saw that requires me to pay. I was concerned that I have to register my personal info, which is then a matter of record. I don't want that. The VPN is completely anonymous, and is a large part of what I want.

You only have to register an address with some domain names for example .com most others don’t require an address, they still need email but just setup a bogus hotmail or gmail account

I'll keep that in mind. I've ordered the parts I need for the pfsense box. So I'll see how well it handles the VPN.
