yaksplat 67 Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 Ever since I started using an Apple TV I've noticed that my transcoding-temp directory has grown out of control. It currently has 9821 .ts files totaling 35GB of storage. Is there some way to get this directroy under control? It swelled to over 50GB before and filled the drive that it was on, causing a non-stop spawning of ffmpeg processes.
Luke 42080 Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 Hi, when you stop video, how are you doing that?
yaksplat 67 Posted April 2, 2018 Author Posted April 2, 2018 On Apple TV it would be hitting pause and then menu to go back. Or "Start Now" for the next episode. There's no stop.
yaksplat 67 Posted April 2, 2018 Author Posted April 2, 2018 So, my son has been watching a playlist of Looney Tunes cartoons on the Apple TV. There are 1192 new files in the last 3 hours. I did catch a flash of "Something went wrong" on the screen, between shows. log attached. server-63658224001.txt
Luke 42080 Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 @@corey are you able to reproduce this with the apple tv app?
corey 317 Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 @@corey are you able to reproduce this with the apple tv app? @@Luke what would you like me to try and re-produce? If it's the volume of transcoding logs I don't personally have content that requires transcoding. If it's the 'Something went wrong' between playing items that's a bit trickier as I bet that's specific to the particular item. @@yaksplat -- Would it be possible to provide video samples?
Luke 42080 Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 Yea you just need something that will transcode and test that the temp files are getting cleaned up after stopping playback or advancing to another video in the play queue.
ebr 16185 Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 And after an abrupt stop of the stream like a crash or unplugging the network (with no stopped report sent from the app).
yaksplat 67 Posted April 3, 2018 Author Posted April 3, 2018 Is everything transcoded? So this file is named ffmpeg-directstream-964dbc6a-01e4-4b69-9e69-e43b2faa3067.txt which implies that it's a direct stream and not remuxed. All of the .ts files are created along with the m3u8 file. yaksplat 67 Posted April 3, 2018 Author Posted April 3, 2018 So This example is a container swap. TranscodeReasons=ContainerNotSupported, Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (copy) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (copy) So an h264 mkv file is no longer supported for directplay? I could have sworn that there never used to be any transcoding and I've had these files for years.
corey 317 Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 (edited) MKV has never been a natively supported container format on Apple TV. It essentially supports MP4 containers and that’s about it. Edited April 4, 2018 by corey
Luke 42080 Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 We are investigating a custom embedded video layer that will allow for more formats though.

I didn't realize that it was an AppleTV issue. That's pretty silly since inside the two files it's exactly the same thing.

It is an apple issue. Their format support has always been limited. The only thing they are really concerned about you being able to play is their content (which is always mp4).

Heu yeah Apple requires more transco, but someone verified why this guy is having 30gigs of files and why Emby doesn’t clean this directory??? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
casminkey 19 Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 I found this thread as I'm having the same issue as of late... although we have no Apple TV's. Mostly Roku, Android TV and Amazon Firestick access emby. Anyway, my Transcoding-temp folder is huge and filled up the drive. Is it safe to clear out this directory? I'll just set up a scheduled task in windows to clear it every couple of days if necessary.
casminkey 19 Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 If it helps, i have about 23,000 files and they date back exactly 2 weeks. Does Emby have a 2 week clean up process on this folder?

No, that is probably the last time you restarted the server. Restarting the server will clear it out. Do your Roku users exit a playing program by hitting the "home" button? If so, that could be the cause.
casminkey 19 Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Ah, ok. I moved the Transcoding temp folder to another drive with more storage so I think i'm good but yes, I would assume users (at least some of the times) just hit the Home button instead of actually stopping the stream. Thanks ebr!
