Why is Live TV always transcoded?

I wonder, is it always like this or it depends on the device or there are some requirements to avoid transcoding?

I'm currently using an m3u tuner but I'm gonna get a USB tuner (MyGica T230C) to use it with NextPVR since Emby still doesn't support it.

There is a log attached so you devs can provide me with a good answer to understand better how Live TV works since this is my first experience with the feature.

I also sent the log at 1:29 pm on 26/03/18.

This appears to be another instance of direct streaming failing.  Again, stats for nerds will tell you when this is the case.

Also, be sure you have the option to direct stream live TV selected in the settings.  But also realize you can only trick play (pause, Rew, FF) if it is transcoding.

the source is an m3u8 which can't direct stream. that will always run through ffmpeg on the server.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Sorry but I didn't complete the sentence, I was going to say that on google chrome they are not getting transcoded.

Correct, but we don't direct play to your IPTV urls using the store apps because we can't validate they are legally obtained video sources.

Oh, I understand now, thanks.

Is it possible for us to get an apk of the android app that does allow direct playing of IPTV sources? Am I understanding that the reason you have it set to transcode IPTV sources is due to legal reasons with the Google Play store?

That's a good question.

That's what I understood...

I have nothing against doing this, it's just extra work for us that we'll have to plan out. It's not as simple to just build you an apk, we also have to remove association with our existing app, and that means giving it a new package id. That's not a trivial change so while I'm ok with the idea, it's not something i can just do real quick.

Please note, this doesn't mean iptv is always transcoded, rather what it means is that iptv will always be routed through your emby server. It is still possible to direct stream that without transcoding, in some cases.

Thanks for the honest answer. I did just think it'd be a trivial sort of thing lol.

Something that's interesting I've found is that the Android mobile version of emby seems to be able to direct play even when pausing rewinding etc. Starts for nerds indicates it's using libmpv player. Are there plans for this player in the Android TV app?

The android tv app already has it and there's an option for it, but on TV devices it comes with some drawbacks. No audio passthrough being the biggest one. It also doesn't perform well on fire tv.
