gcoupe 63 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I'm noticing some oddities in the way MB3 Server is parsing my ID3 tags in music tracks. For example, here's the metadata of an MP3 track being displayed by Media Monkey (which I use for editing tags): Notice that the delimiter for fields containing multiple tags is a ; Now here's the same track being displayed in the web browser interface of MB3: The Album artist and Genre tags have been correctly recognised as having multiple values. However, in the Composer tag, the fact that I use a Last name, First names convention appears to have confused MB3. I don't think the comma should be treated as a delimiter between multiple values...
ginjaninja 605 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 comma is a delimeter/separator for artist and composer. Dont think album artists have delimeters. Under tools there are some suggestions for using mp3tag to organise music. Mmonkey may have something similar. It took me 1hr to go through composers for 65000 tracks using a filter to find incorrectly tagged composers and correct, with the help of some mp3tag auto correct actions like stripping leading and trailing spaces..changing and or & into a separator when applicable...changing surname, firstnames into firstnames surname. The bottom line is you need to tidy up your metadata..I think you will be waiting a long time if you expect mb3 to automatically understand composers in your current format. gcoupe 63 Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) Actually, I don't think what you say is quite correct. All those fields (Album Artist, Artist and Composer) can have multiple values, and the delimiter is a semicolon, forward slash (/), not a comma. All my other music applications (Xbox Music, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center and Media Monkey) support this, and are not confused by the use of the Last name, First Names convention with its use of the comma. So at the moment, MB3 is the odd one out. Edited March 25, 2014 by gcoupe
ginjaninja 605 Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Multiple values is just how the client interprets the tag..the tag is just a long string I believe. Mb3 did not split album artist last time I checked c. 1 month ago. Mb3 does interpret comma as separator in composer currently. Maybe you sould raise a feature request to suggest user preference in the separator? But in the short term you could ammend your tags to fit in with all your clients. gcoupe 63 Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 According to the ID3v2.3 standard, the delimiter separator is a "/" character. Many ID3 tag editors also recognise the ";" character, but to adhere strictly to the standard, I should amend my tags to use the "/" character. However, a comma is NOT a delimiter character - so MB3 is simply wrong here, and this is a bug that should be fixed!
kkhan 16 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 The standard delimiter is a "/" character. Whatever character you choose to display the delimiter as, Media Monkey always uses the ID3V2.3 standard, i.e. "/". You can check this using a hex editor or using MP3Tag.
gcoupe 63 Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Yup, you're right - Media Monkey gives me the option of displaying the delimiter using a character of my choice, but under the covers it is following the standard and using "/". Thanks. Now - can MB3 Server please start respecting the ID3v2 standard? At the moment it makes a mess of displaying artist and composer metadata...
gcoupe 63 Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 That's fine by me. Thanks. Hopefully the support for multiple album artists will follow at some point down the road...
Luke 42078 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Ok, one change at a time. we'll remove the comma as a delimiter for composers but leave it for genres and studios.

Comma should also be removed for genres as it causes issues for Discogs genres (they use comma and slash): https://blog.discogs.com/en/genres-and-styles/ See my other post:
