PJM47 0 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 How about considering lowering the price of Emby? It looks really good and could easily capture the market and wipe out the competition but the price is just stupid at the moment. Not many people are going to spend that sort of money when there are free alternatives. I just think a lower price could result in hugely increased long term gain. Make it a throw away purchase, like $30-$60 for lifetime so that people don't have to think too much about it. Reel them in now. I wouldn't hesitate at $60 but $119 is an investment which I and many others can't justify and so are put off. You don't need to copy the Plex model. The whole point of this software is to avoid monthly costs but the life time cost is way too much leaving us no choice but to stick with Kodi and leave Emby behind. Thoughts?
Bert 49 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Personally I think it's reasonably priced as is. One could look at it as $10 a month for a year then free forever. Whether there is actually a competing free software is arguable. I like Kodi but definitely like Emby more due to cross platform availability.
PJM47 0 Posted March 14, 2018 Author Posted March 14, 2018 True but the point was that the developers might be able to make more by lowering the price and selling vastly more copies and making Emby more mainstream, the current pricing whether reasonable or not is unlikely to allow that which is a shame.
Carlo 4561 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 (edited) $4.5 to $5 a month (monthly/yearly) doesn't seem to expensive to me to have software that allows you to run your own "Netflix" for personal/family use. Just curious but how would you feel about a "financed plan" of $9.95 a month for 15 months? Cancel at any time but get nothing back. So it would cost 2 x the monthly price but would go toward a lifetime purchase. It would have 3 extra months of payments sort of like a finance charge. Would something like that be easier to swallow? Personally, I'd love to see them do away with lifetime licenses moving forward (grandfather those already in it) so there is always a flow of current money based on users. You could then slightly lower the price and do something like $9.95 per 3 months or $34.95 a year. It's important to strike a balance of income for the devs and cost control for the users. PJM47 0 Posted March 14, 2018 Author Posted March 14, 2018 Yes that would be more attractive. I do understand the balance needed, but I personally dont think it’s priced quite right to maximise profit for the devs, like I say $50 and I’d buy it without much thought, I wonder how many others would. 38 million Kodi users is a big market to tap into!
mastrmind11 722 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 it's impossible to speculate the financials of the business. keep in mind, these guys also need to eat, and perhaps the maturity of the business is not at a point where lowering the price and/or changing the monthly sub cost isn't in the carsd just yet. irt to kodi, i used it free for years w/ the sql sync option.... which became too cumbersome w/ multiple clients on different versions not syncing. where these guys will make their money is live tv/dvr. tbh, if they charged a $7/mo fee for live tv support, that's where they'd make their money... make everything else free. I and probably everyone else on the planet, would pay that.
Luke 42089 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 The issue is that we'd like to be able to sustain ourselves with ongoing development for years to come. If we gave you a really cheap price, how would you feel if we couldn't sustain and had to close shop after a couple years? I'm guessing you'd probably be pretty upset, right? 1
PJM47 0 Posted March 14, 2018 Author Posted March 14, 2018 It’s not impossible to speculate, that’s what business is about. Correct pricing and good advertising is essential. How many have visited your web site and then turned away once they get to the pricing page? Those are stats you should have and that’s not speculation. I”d rather sell millions at $50 than hundreds at a $100 wouldn’t you? But it was just a suggestion. If you feel more comfortable with the niche market good luck. P.s. There’s lots of ways to make more money once you have a good customer base. I would pay for add on apps and future upgrades etc at a reasonable price.
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 The price is competitive with Plex. That's the only real competition I know of so really what other a measure shold they use? 1
