Hi.

Whats the correct way to update to new versions using command line.

Also not to delete all the settings? I do have a backup in case.

Ubuntu.

Thank you.

How did you originally install?

Depends greatly on how you originally installed. If you used the repo you might consider switching to the newer pre built .deb package. However having a backup of settings and such is a great idea before switching.

From what i understand at least for now emby is focusing on the pre built packages rather than using a repo.

something like

Stop emby from server.

wget https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/releases/download/3.3.1.0/emby-server-deb_3.3.1.0_amd64.deb

dpkg -i emby-server-deb_3.3.1.0_amd64.deb

I do this with the old version still installed.

Last time I done it this way my server did not show images or the movies.

So I apt-get purge.

I am not sure if i need to remove the old emby and install the new version, then install the backup.

As i say I dont know the correct way to update the version I have.

Would be nice to just have a button on the server that says "Do you want to update" then everything automatic.

If i remember correctly there were people that had issues updating from the repo type emby to the pre packaged emby. With that in mind i would believe that a uninstall and then re-install would be best. Should only apply to switching from the repo to package. Further updates via package have run smoothly for me just downloading them and doing dpkg -i <package name>. Also if you are on the repo you will like the package type there have been some pretty major improvements like library scan time.

In your case, you would just go back to the website and follow the instructions again. you don't need to purge.
