Intermediary Media Library

Good Morning!

My eldest son is 11, followed by 10 and 5, they all have access to Children's tv and Children's Movies, but I'd like to give a little more content to my eldest. The problem is I don't want to give him access to grown-up tv and grownup movies and rely on the rating system, some 12 movies are more than acceptable for him whilst others might not be.

My plan was to add a new media library called "Teen Movies" then place shortcuts inside that to the movies he is allowed to watch, but this obviously doesn't work. I don't really want to have another folder of copied movies taking up extra space for the same content, is there a way this might be possible? symbolic links etc?

If possible I don't want to create a new folder and move content to it, to then add that to existing libraries, my backups already backup each of the media folders and I'm happy with the way the content sits on the multiple drives I have.

I have my media organized as follows:

-Grown-up TV

--TV Series

---season 01

----episode name blah blah

Grownup tv is split across two physical drives: Old TV (canceled) and current TV (ongoing)

-Documentaries

--TV Series

---season 01

----episode name blah blah

-Children's TV

--TV Series

---season 01

----episode name blah blah

-Grown-up Movies

--Movie

---Movie name blah blah

-Childrens Movies

--Movie

---Movie name blah blah

-Box Sets

--Box set 1

---movie 1

----movie name

---movie 2

----movie name

--Box set 2

---movie 1

----movie name

---movie 2

----movie name

Any advice here would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Karl

Tag the stuff you don't want him to see and set the parental control by tags.  It's much more exact than relying on the rating system.

I always found this counter-intuitive. Rather than tagging what you don't want someone to see, wouldn't it be easier to tag what you do? Say I have 25 movies I want my daughter to have access to, I have to go through 1500 movies and tag 1475 movies that she can't see. I'd much prefer to tag "daughter" on 25 movies, and have her only be allowed to access items with the "daughter" tag.

I agree with you 100%, the concept is pretty ridiculous.  There are a few FR's regarding it as well.

from what i've read, everything has to be tagged "one at a time" as bulk editing is due "in a future release" is that still the case?

There is a "Custom Rating" field on every item for just this purpose.  Simply change that to whatever you feel the movie should be rated and let the Parental Control system work for you.
