i7 4790k x i7 6700k

Hi everyone.

 

Everyone knows that I am totally lay. I am negotiating with a dedicated server company to host my emby server and I came across these two situations:

 

i7 4790k and i7 7600k.

 

Viewing the settings on the site:

The codec section caught my attention:

 

FOR THE 6700K:

What exactly does this information mean (would you do it in transcoding)? How do I know if any of these is compatible with iten quick sync?

It's referring to hardware acceleration. Those are the codecs the GPUs support. Yes, that's quick sync. See if they have an i7 7700. It will do more.

have both of those cpu's - both have QS

 

the 6700k is approx 50% faster during a software decode - i.e. without QS in handbrake

 

the 4790 using QS is approx x5 faster for a H264 @1080p encode - if you accept the worse output

 

i expect the 6700k will be x5+ faster when using QS - cant test as it does not work with my motherboard

 

Also the 6700k being a newer cpu model can use H265 decode/encode at 8bit which the 4790 does not - might come in handy if you want to do some 4k/HVec work in the future - 10bit is on the 8700k 

 

If you want to use QS with your hosted server make sure that its enabled and working before you part with your cash

 

I hope that gives you a hint or two for more of your own research

7700 does 10bit hevc, too. That's what I have in my htpc. But the motherboard needs to have the Z270 chipset.

yeah but is that not only partial support for 10bit?

No, it's full. All kaby lake do. But you need the Z270 or above to get the full capabilities.

I'd suggest you use that one, then. The GPU might be enough to support 10 transcodes, depending on what you're transcoding. And the CPU has 8 logical processors. I was using one of those in my server before I upgraded. I never tested it's limits, though.

4790k is 289,00 BRL

The 4790k won't get you anywhere close to 10 transcodes with it's GPU. But the CPU is the same. So if you want any hope of hardware acceleration, you want the 6700k.

Look at the passmark score and divide it by 1000.  That's how you get an idea of number of simultaneous transcodes within 1 or 2.  If you're going to use the experimental hardware transcode feature, then you probably get 15ish.  Given the difference in GPU, yes, the price disparity compensates, especially for what you're trying to do.  And you can OC the CPU for probably another couple streams.

Depends on the OS the server uses, Intel graphics drivers, motherboard and for some they have to add a monitor to the hdmi/display port or there are hdmi plugs to trick the os to make it appear that a monitor is plugged in - its not an exact science

 

for my 4790 i had to add the Intel drivers and add a monitor for Handbrake to see QS - that was with 2012r2

 

for my 6700k the motherboard disables QS as a "feature" so i can't use it/enable it

 

Put the onus on your provider to make it work as you will not have physical access to the machine i suspect
