AgileHumor 123 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 note, MKV do not work with Windows 8. Loss of functionality IMHO.
miltonberle 5 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 MKV'S work in my setup (90% of my video files are in this container) in Win8 with MBC and MBT. The 720p mkv's with multichannel audio work without any issues when using 'Play to' to the XB1 through the WP8 app ands Win8 Store App. I'll try converting a 1080p mkv with multichannel audio to wmv or mp4 and see what happens. 2
miltonberle 5 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but it seems like the appropriate place. I've never tried to use DLNA before so please forgive any ignorance on what it's truly doing (I've always used the HTPC with various versions of Media Browser directly connected to the TV and AVR). It was very cool to see the Xbox One show up as a 'Play to' option. Great work MB team! Tested so far (these are with both apps since they both have the same issues - granted the issues are probably not the apps themselves): Music/MP3's: Stream with no issues Video: 720p avi, wmv, mkv stream with no issues 1080p wmv, mkv with stereo (2 channel) audio stream with no issues 1080p wmv, mkv with 6+ channel audio stream BUT every 30-60 seconds there's a 10-20 second pause (I have this same issue using the HTPC plugged into the XB1 via hdmi, so I'm assuming this is actually an issue with the way the XB1 handles pcm multichannel audio coming from an 'external' source) Live TV: Not tested (no Live TV support in these apps from what I can tell) Subtitles: None worked except those 'burned' onto the video (I assume the XB1 video app doesn't know what to do with .srt's) I'll try adjusting audio settings in the XB1 and on the MBS this weekend to see if anything helps with the above. My test videos were 6 channel audio. Have you tried adjusting the bit-streaming settings in the Xbox One? I'll test it further tonight. Thanks for testing. Edited March 18, 2014 by swhitmore
7illusions 1249 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Glad you like it. Soon you'll have a update Win8.1 app to play with as well, with easier/beeter access to the PlayTo functionality and an alternative music layout as a option.. *just sayin'* 3

Sorry, I meant meant this issue using Windows Media Players "Play To": http://superuser.com/questions/504209/windows-8-dlna-streaming-of-mkv-files I didn't realize the MB3 made this work I'm pleased that the MediaBrowser team continues to work around Microsoft's dysfunction in the HTPC space. Works on my Samsung TV too. Update - This is amazing!!! Control the active queue from any remote too...roams from PC browser to tablet. Edited March 19, 2014 by AgileHumor 1
swhitmore 781 Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 I set the XB1 to use only Dolby Digital bitstreaming and changed the MBS to only output in Dolby Digital (not really sure if this would have any effect though since I dont know if MBS' DLNA tries to transcode or not): 1080p MKV's with 6+ channel audio will pause every 20-30 sec now, but recover in 1-10 sec ... a slight improvement but still really not usable. The XB1 is connected to local network wirelessly, I'm going to try connecting it via wire and see if that helps any with the stuttering. Hey, I don't think it's your wireless. I'm having the same issues. I'll do some more tests when I can, just having a busy week

miltonberle 5 Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Ok, I connected the XB1 via wire and the videos would launch a little quicker but the 1080p's with 6 channels audio still stutter. I reencoded a few movies to various mp4's and wmv's with different types of multichannel audio... the only 1080p that worked was of course wmv with 5.1 wma pro audio, but that's a huge hassle to create so I suppose the waiting game begins for either MS to allow more formats, a native XB1 mb3 client, or a transcoding scheme that allows multichannel audio. @@7illusions...I got the latest win8 store app and the new music layout is great! 2
moviefan 187 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I haven't been using the XB1 with Win8 but with Mac OSX client and Chrome web browser I am able to play 1080p 6 channel audio to XB1 via WiFi with high rate of success. Will do some additional testing tonight and see if I can replicate the issue you describe. 1
Luke 42077 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 can someone make a video of the xbox one in action with media browser? Thanks.
moviefan 187 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Not sure what exactly you'd like me to Video..... It just starts playing the video on the TV. Doesnt really look any different than playing it any other way?...
swhitmore 781 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 can someone make a video of the xbox one in action with media browser? Thanks. I tried to make a video, but couldn't get 6ch audio working. I'll try again with a newer build once I'm home from the mines.

Do you mind telling us what the video and audio is encoded with (codec wise) and what container it's in? Also the bitrates too. Edited March 26, 2014 by miltonberle
moviefan 187 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 (edited) Here is a video.. <EDIT OUT> After some more testing it seems that certain very high bitrates do indeed have some issues playing. Able to play around 10Mb/s pretty successfully however. Would need to do more testing to see where the exact cutoff is. Edited March 27, 2014 by moviefan 1

Also the bitrates too. Sorry didn't get a chance last night to do more testing. Are there particular things you want me to test? Most of my files are h.264/mkv with dts or ac3 audio. Bit rates of varying amounts all over the map.
swhitmore 781 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I just tried taking a video, but I can't get it to work at all. I get the same buffering issue as before. What format was that video?
swhitmore 781 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I just installed Version 3.0.5198.33636, so I'm going to try with that.
swhitmore 781 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Here are the logs from the few I just tried: ffmpeg-e12799bb-c129-4668-aaee-63a9e155ed19 ffmpeg-9975a689-c549-4f05-b5b1-5c5c5c06ede0 ffmpeg-c7e7d22e-509f-4403-8684-7a349aebeb8c server-63531510279 I noticed that in all of them, the FPS was around 100. Could that be causing the buffering issue? frame= 65 fps=0.0 q=23.0 size= 527kB time=00:00:02.90 bitrate=1488.8kbits/s frame= 109 fps=106 q=23.0 size= 1392kB time=00:00:04.73 bitrate=2407.8kbits/s frame= 155 fps=100 q=23.0 size= 2343kB time=00:00:06.67 bitrate=2874.5kbits/s frame= 210 fps=102 q=23.0 size= 3499kB time=00:00:08.91 bitrate=3214.3kbits/s frame= 262 fps=102 q=23.0 size= 4587kB time=00:00:11.07 bitrate=3394.1kbits/s frame= 301 fps= 97 q=21.0 size= 5479kB time=00:00:12.73 bitrate=3524.3kbits/s frame= 346 fps= 96 q=22.0 size= 6263kB

moviefan 187 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 can someone make a video of the xbox one in action with media browser? Thanks. Are you referring to just using the WebUI with MediaBrowser instead of the DLNA functionality?
moviefan 187 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Either or Well I did upload that video of me doing it using DLNA so I guess you didnt like that one? I edited and took the link down after I realized it showed my real name there. I can PM it to you if you didnt see it. If not maybe let me know what you'd prefer I do. I am not a great actor so that's about the best dialogue you will get out of me.
Luke 42077 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Yea send it, I didn't see it. But I intend to take it to the xbox one forums so hopefully that's ok
