Much has changed since mid 2016. The server web player cannot play .mkv nor recognize my properly named .srt in same folder, only option is to download new sub file. I do not understand how the player cannot play the most common .mkv. There was no option to change from stereo to 5.1  Will try an find my old server version number but you could also set an external media player as default player. All these old options that worked great are now just gone??? I do not understand this, why can't the player simply direct play all my media files like it used to. Over half my movies are in .mkv container (as I am sure many others do as well) and they all have either an internal or external .srt file but the subtitles I have to do without?? and I settle on all my .mkv being transcoded??. This is ridiculous, all standard movie file types (eg .mp4, .avi,  .flv, WebM, VOB, Ogg, HEVC , .mkv, and audio types too DTS, AAC, AC3, FLAC, .ape, Vorbis, .mp3, alac, .wav are now easily played by many players. Could you guys not use one of the many open source players already out there? Or at least reintroduce the option for us to install one (MPC-BE as a great example). Can I go back to an older server version? Just seems strange that most of my movies will be transcoded and be missing it's subtitle. I understand that my friend with a phone (or other app) who accesses my library may need this done so they can watch it, and that is great, you guys have done a great job with Emby, it just seems we are losing features instead of gaing new ones.                     PLEASE HELP

I am not sure what version you had before, but the current version of Emby that I am using can play mkv files just fine through the web player without issue. Also I am able to play srt files with it and switch between acc and 5.1 audio. I just tested it as I found it weird that it wouldn't. Just because it will be asked for, you might want to post your server logs for the devs. I am sure this is of no help, but it seems to work fine for me. It does transcode, but it is not putting really any load on the server to do so.
