Organizing multiple quality movies

I hope I can pose this question clearly, since I've been trying to figure this out myself for the past several days to no avail.

I have 4K movies with corresponding 1080p versions in the same folder.  Now I know how to properly name the movies so that I can select different qualities within the Emby app:

example:

The Movie (year)

          \The Movie (year) - 4K UHD.mkv

          \The Movie (year) - HD 1080p.mkv

However,,,I have added another layer of complexity.  I use the Emby plugin with Kodi on my Nvidia Shield running as Direct Play.

Here's the issue:  When I put the two quality movies in the folder, I can't seem to be able to control which movie Emby will add the nfo file and scrape the chapter thumbnails from.  I need it save the file to the 4K file but many of the 4K movies I have end up saving the nfo files to their respective 1080p files.

The reason I have to save it to 4K movies rather than the 1080p movies is because I want Kodi to play the 4K movies by default.  When the Emby plugin is set to Direct Play, I cannot choose which file to play.  It automatically plays the file that has the nfo file saved after it.

I know I can set the Emby plugin in Kodi to Plugin Mode to allow me to select which quality to play, but I want to avoid that for two reasons.

1. Plugin Mode does not show chapter thumbnails when playing movies in Kodi.

2. Plugin Mode does not show the folder directory properly when I press "info" on a movie in Kodi

Sounds like a Kodi issue.  I assume you are using the standard Kodi plugin?  Have you tried Embycon?

1. Known Kodi limitation.

2. A problem only you have. No issues here.

Kodi itseft doesn't support multiple source selection. If you split both version in different directories, so they are identified individually, then both will appear in Kodi, allowing you to select what you want. Otherwise, there's only one title. I could add a menu option to select the source, but you would not have chapter images.

I tried Embycon and did like how it was structured and how lightweight it was.  The problem is that I have a huge library and it would timeout whenever entering a new section or just take an extremely long time to load.

I outlined points 1 & 2 to explain why I don't use the Emby addon in "Addon Mode." Using it in "Native Paths" mode solves those two issues, however, it introduces the issue of not being able to select which video file to play.  It defaults to playing the movie that has the nfo save along with it.

What I would like to know is how Emby chooses which movie file to save the nfo to so that I can ensure the 4K movies are the ones that get their chapters scraped and nfos saved.

At this point it is a new feature so you can't really predict or control which one will get the nfo. It's something we still need to iron out.

Okay.  I was hoping it was related to file creation date, but it seems to not have a rhyme or reason to the order.  Thanks for clearing that up.  I'll have to find another way for now then.
