Install Win 7 or Win 10?

I'm fixing to do a new install on a new SSD and sort of wonder if maybe I should upgrade my windows while I'm at it?  I have always used Emby (and MB2/MB3) for WMC, with a few themes though I love Chocolate.

WMC is not on Win10, although there seems to be a unofficial install of WMC for 10.  Should I still with the tried and true Win7? Should I install Win10 and use the work around for WMC? Should I install Win10 and, I believe, use Emby Theater (no experience with using)?

My goal is to make it as similar to Emby for WMC because I'm so use to it, but maybe Theater offers a better way to do stuff?  I don't do live TV or record anything, I solely watch my media through Emby.

HTPC info:

i5 3570K (3.4GHz)

16GB RAM,

ASrock Z77 motherboard

256GB SSD

4 HHDs for media

Thanks for any and all opinions on which route I should take this evening!!

I am running almost the same Rig as you for my server but I do use it for Live TV. I'm running Win7 which has support to 2020 and I need it for WMC. If you go win10 and use the "work around" to get WMC to run, be careful as Microsoft Updates usually "break" it and you need to do the WMC "work around" again. If you don't need WMC for Live TV, my suggestion would be Win10 and use Emby Theater.

I myself, and looking at building a new rig solely using Emby theater for everything including Live TV.

Since you are making this move, I would try out Emby Theater to get away from the legacy of WMC and get more of the features of Emby.

You could always install it on a test machine (or your current machine) just to try out.

You could also consider not using a PC at all and get something like a Shield.

Thanks for the replies!  I need the HTPC in the movie room because that's where all the HDD's for my media is so stuck using it.

It sounds like Win10 with Theater may be the better way to go and to stay current with Emby plus have full features it offers. I'd guess possibly years from now it'll may not be supported as Win10 takes over.   Before I wipe my Win7 SSD this evening, I'll install theater and play around with it for a bit.  Hopefully there's a chocolate theme (or similar), I love the layout of things in it.......and use to it too. :)

Thanks again!

I don't understand why that requires you having an HTPC as your interface...

You could have that machine run the server and use a Shield or something else as the interface.

The HTPC is already in the movie room, so figured may as well use it to run Emby instead of having an additional interface to run it in the same room.

In other rooms through my house, I have Chromecast to access it though.

Counting down the hours to do just that!  Out of curiosity, wonder if Emby Theater has a way to show newest added media files?

They all share the same info. So anything that's added will be in the 'latest' sections.

Once the new release of Theater is out (it has recent updates), I'll continue my setup guide, and post it.

Awesome!  I'll keep an eye open for it.

Great to hear, I think Win10 and Emby theater will be my solution!!

It's a great app. I'm an HTPC guy, all the way. Nothing else can give me what I want.

If you want to stay with the HTPC that is fine but the fact the machine exists and where it is really is not relevant to that decision (other than possibly the fact that you may want to do double-duty with the machine).

You can still use the machine as a server and keep it where it is (or not - like move that noisy thing out of the media room...) and simplify your life by not having to deal with all the HTPC "issues" with one of the other options available now (Shield, Mi, Roku, Apple TV, etc.) and maybe even gain functionality in the process (YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu ...).

Just something to consider.

And Grandma and Grandpa always know exactly how to work them without any instruction!  ;)

As well as the latest section you can sort the main movie section by date added newest to oldest which has the advantage of going back more than the handful in the latest section.

Installing Win10 is great, SO MUCH quicker than Win7! It still amazes me this 2nd time of installing Win10, especially after an install of Win7 with all the dang drivers and such.

I tried out Theater for a bit and while I honestly like the layout and customization of Emby for WMC using Chocolate theme, I knew after the replies to this thread Win10/Theater was the way to go. Win10 definitely boots faster and seems more "snappy" so far.  I'm sure after getting stuff fully setup and using it for a week or 2, it'll become more familiar.

Think I'm good to go for now.  Moving the HTPC into another is definitely an idea though. My movies room is small compared to alot so it does gain 2-3 degrees compared to the rest of the house.  partly due to the projector and definitely part of the 4 HDDs and rest of HTPC that's running.  I'll definitely be considering the idea, but I do like the speed of having it local too.

BTW is there anyway to by-pass the start up where you have to pick your computer name to get into Emby Theater? I'm sure there's an option and just haven't come across it yet, but so far after installing it 2x today I haven't come across it yet.

Thanks again for the help, definitely guided me in the right direction and made re-installing Windows again a much easier pill to swallow!

If you're bored you could try out Ember for Emby. Pretty good but probably not a 10 foot interface. Also costs a bit of money.

With Emby Theater, once you login it will remember the login. Is that not what you're seeing?

Nevermind, for some reason it asked me for PC with server on Win7 with both Emby for WMC and Theater. After Win10 install it never asked me again so all good.

Onto putting old SSD into shop computer and installing Win10 on it now too. I'm on a roll, lol

Got it all installed, setup and read all my media last night. This afternoon I got to spend some time with Theater and glad I was told to go with 10 and Theater, so glad I decided to ask on here. Win10 by itself makes the HTPC run alot smoother and faster overall. It'll take a bit to get comfortable with theater, but definitely digging it.

I still kinda miss the layout of chocolate and some of it's settings like changing folder pic sizes so I show more of them on the screen and removing the label of each one size the folder pics show them already. Both may be settings I've missed, I'll have to go back thru them again. Will also see if maybe some other themes are offered for Theater since I have no clue.

Thanks again for the advice, way happier with Win10 and Theater!
